1Metric Madness
Why might you need to know the metric system? How
can math help me understand my world?
- By Shelley, Lynn, Matt, and Trevor Mrs. Shott
- 6th period
2Millimeters and Centimeters
- A millimeter is the length of the period at the
end of this sentence. - A centimeter is the length of a raison, or the
width of your pinky finger.
3Millimeters and Centimeters
- Millimeter is written mm.
- Centimeter is written cm.
- A millimeter is 0.001 meters (1/1000 meter)
- A centimeter is 0.01 meters (1/100 meter)
- Both measurements are used to measure length.
- Both are used to measure items that are not too
large.
4Actual Measuring
width of the structure between the cubby 2.5 cm
length of calculator 14 cm
width of pencil 7mm
thickness of the orange math book 3 cm
5Problem Solving With Centimeters and Millimeters
- ProblemTwo kids went to the roller rink. One
was a guy, and the other was a girl. At this
particular roller skating rink, for some odd
reason, the guys all have to add 7 centimeters to
their actual shoe size, and girls have to add 75
millimeters. - Can You Solve It?
- If Robs shoe was 260 mm regularly, and Sarahs
was 30 cm, how much bigger will Sarahs roller
skates be than Robs? State your answer in
centimeters and millimeters.
6Solution To The Problem
To solve the problem, the first thing you need to
do is convert each shoe size to the proper
measurement being used. I changed Robs 260 mm to
26 cm since I was adding cm to it, not mm and I
changed Sarahs 30 cm to 300 mm. I then added the
correct additional measurement required by the
roller rink. Robs shoe ended up being 33 cm, or
330 mm, and Sarahs was 375 mm, or 37.5 cm. I
then subtracted to find out how much bigger
Sarahs shoe was than Robs. The correct answer
is 4.2 cm, 42 mm.
7Why We Need to Know Millimeters and Centimeters?
- Some items are too small to be measured in feet
and inches, so we need to know and understanding
how to use cm and mm. - To make sure parts fit perfectly together, they
are made and sold using metric measures. If you
want to buy the right part at the hardware store,
you better know your millimeters and centimeters. - If you ever want custom sunglasses you will need
to know the width and length in cm. - In some countries, like Japan, shoes are measured
using centimeters. - Pencil lead is made using the mm measurement. If
you want the right lead, you better know how to
measure in millimeters. - If you plan to be an optometrist when you grow
up, you will need to know these metrics
measurements.
8Meters and Kilometers
- Meters
- Written m
- 1000 m 1 km
- 100 cm 1 m
- One meter is the length of 4 world book volumes
stacked on top of each other.
- Kilometers
- Written km
- 1 km1000 m
- Length of 5 city blocks.
One Meter
9Actual Measuring
door height 2 m
Table Length 1.81 m
Whiteboard length 2.43 m
trash can height .38 m
map 700 m
10Problem Solving With Meters and Kilometers
Problem Ben was running a marathon. He has ran
1500 m already. 1 km is about 5 city blocks. The
race was 5.5 km long. Can You Solve It? How
many more blocks does he have to run?
11Solution To The Problem
First change 5.5 km into 5500 m. Next subtract
1500 from 5500 and you get 4000 m. Change 4000m.
back into 4 km. Then multiply 4 by 5 (blocks) to
get 20. Ben needs to run 20 more blocks.
12Why We Need to Know Meters and Kilometers
You need these units of measurement to Figure
out travel distance from location to location in
almost every country of the world. Find the
altitude of a plane. Understand distances
related to sporting events because they are
measured using meters and kilometers.
13Grams and Kilograms
- A gram is written as g.
- There are 1,000 milligrams in a gram
- A gram has a mass of a jellybean
- A kilogram is written as kg.
- There are 1,000 grams in one kilogram
- A kilogram has a mass of a cantaloupe
14Actual Measuring
1 Cantaloupe is equal to 1 kilogram.
1 jellybean is equal to 1 gram.
15Problem Solving With Grams and Kilograms
Problem Mike is having an Easter egg hunt. He
buys 300 plastic eggs all together. Some eggs
hold 5 grams of jellybeans. Some egg hold 10
grams of jellybeans. Mike purchased 2 kilograms
of jellybeans to fill the eggs. Can You Solve
It? How many 5 gram-size plastic eggs did Mike
buy, and how any 10 gram-size plastic Easter eggs
did Mike buy?
1610 gram Easter egg
5 gram Easter egg
Jellybeans (5)
Jellybeans (10)
17Solution To The Problem
18Why We Need to Know Grams and Kilograms
- To know how much fat and sodium is in our food
and understand other nutritional facts found on
food labels - To figure out the total price we will need to pay
for produce or other items that are sold by price
per gram. - So that we know just how much weight we have
gained or lost between hospital or doctors
office visits.
19Liter and Celsius
- Liter is written as l
- Celsius is written C
- 1 liter is the same as half of a 2 liter bottle
of soda - Celsius is the system countries outside of the US
use to measure temperature
20Actual Measuring
This holds 250 Milliliters
0o Celsius 50 Celsius
21Problem Solving With Liters
- Problem
- Kristi is irrigating her garden. She needs
100.25 kiloliters of water. She uses 30,000
liters of water. - Can You Solve It?
- Will that much water be enough?
22Problem Solving With Celsius
- ProblemMary has a thermometer on her front
porch. She checked it every day for four days.
The first day the temperature was 20C, the
second day the temperature was 25C, the third
day the temperature was 27C, the fourth day the
temperature was 24C. - Can You Solve It?What was the average
temperature for the four days?
23Solution To The Problems
- Problem 1- Since Kristi needs 100.25 kiloliters
of water she didnt use enough. To find the
answer you multiply 100.25 by 1000 because there
are 1000 liters in a kiloliter. Kristi only used
30,000 liters when she needed 100,250 liters of
water. - Problem 2- To find the average temperature of
the four days you add together the four
temperatures from the four days. 20252724
96. Then you divide by the number of temperatures
you have (4) and you get the average temperature.
96/4 24 The average temperature for the 4
days is 24C.
24Why We Need to Know Liters and Celsius
- The Celsius degree is commonly used among
scientists. - In most of the other parts of the world Celsius
is the main unit of temperature. - Liters are used in the medical field and among
scientists. - Liters are also very common in the United States
and other parts of the world. - In order to know just how much of any liquid
medicine to take, you need to know how to measure
in milliliters.
25How Do We Measure Up?
Shelleys smile is 7 cm long. The shoulder widths
for Lynn, Matt, and Shelley range from 30-36 cm.
Trevors legs are about 77 cm long. Lynn weighs
47 kilograms.
26How Can Math Help Me Understand My World?
- Math is everywhere and in order to really
understand the world, you need to know math. - Measurement is math and measurement is everywhere
as well. - Every time you read a food label, follow a
recipe, watch the weather report, print out
driving directions, hop on the scale, or
participate in a sporting event math and
measurement are involved. - Understanding math and measurement can help you
figure out or make decisions like - whether or not you are getting enough vitamins
and minerals in your diet - how to double a recipe
- what clothes you should wear based on the outdoor
temperature - whether or not you have a fever
- How much further you have to go before you arrive
at your destination - Which golf club you should use on your next shot
- If you understand math and measurement, life and
the world around you is so much easier to figure
out!
