Tides

• Tides are caused by the gravitational pull of the
  Moon and Sun on the Earth.
• The Moon controls the tides.
• There are always 2 high tides and 2 low tides on
  the Earth at any given time.
• One high tide is caused when the Moons gravity
  pulls the water away from the Earth on the side
  facing the Moon.
• The other high tide occurs because the Moons
  gravity pulls the Earth away from the water on
  the side of the Earth opposite the Moon.
• The two low tides are always found between the
  areas of high tide and occur as a result of the
  water leaving the area to fill in the areas of
  high tide.

Spring and Neap tides

• Spring Tides
• Tides that have a higher than normal high tide
  and a lower than normal low tide.
• These tides occur around the time of the Full
  Moon and the New Moon.
• Neap Tides
• Tides that have a lower than normal high tide and
  a higher than normal low tide.
• These tides occur around the times of a 1st and
  3rd Quarter Moon.
