Introduction

• How did Southeast Los Angeles become a
  predominantly Hispanic neighborhood?
• Two of the cities, Huntington Park and South
  Gate, experienced a tremendous increase in their
  Hispanic population.
• In both places, it went up from 4 to about 95
  in 40 years.

A typology of Barrios in the Hispanization of Los
Angeles

• From a Plaza based to a Metropolitan Realms
  Barrio type.
• These changes reflect both an increase in the
  number of Latinos as well as a geographical
  dispersion over Southeast LA.

Why did the area change so quickly?

• Exogenous factors deindustrialization and racial
  riots in the mid 60s
• Endogenous factors decrease in prices of real
  estate and later reindustrialization

Past, present and future

• Sountheast LA used to be a predominantly Anglo
  suburb and kept the aspects tied to this culture.
• The population is however nearly completely
  composed of Hispanics.
• This situation results in a unique merge of these
  two elements
