13Early Church Fathers
Early Church Fathers Taught
Shepherd of Hermas (90 A.D.)there is no other
repentance except that one when we descended into
the water and received the forgiveness of our
former sins. Justin (A.D. 140)Then they are
led by us to where there is water, and in the
manner by which we were regenerated they are
regenerated. Iranaeus (A.D. 160)remember
that we have received baptism for remission of
sins. Tertullian (A.D. 200)Baptism itself is
a bodily act, because we are immersed in water
but it has a spiritual effect, because we are set
free from sins.
14Martin Luther on Faith Alone
Sola Fide!
Sentence continued
"We are savedby faith alone. . .
. . .but faith is never alone."
Martin Luther
Luther called justification by faith alone the
article upon which the Church stands or falls.
15Romans 328
Justification By Faith
Romans 328 (NKJV) Therefore we conclude that a
man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of
the law.
16Romans 42-4
Justification By Faith
- Romans 42-4 (NKJV)
- For if Abraham was justified by works, he has
something to boast about, but not before God. - For what does the Scripture say? Abraham
believed God, and it was accounted to him for
righteousness. - Now to him who works, the wages are not counted
as grace but as debt.
17Romans 45-7
Justification By Faith
- Romans 45-7 (NKJV)
- But to him who does not work but believes on Him
who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted
for righteousness, - just as David also describes the blessedness of
the man to whom God imputes righteousness apart
from works - Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are
forgiven, and whose sins are covered
18Galatians 216
Salvation By Grace Through Faith
Galatians 216 (NKJV) knowing that a man is not
justified by the works of the law but by faith in
Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ
Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in

the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.
19Galatians 216
Salvation By Grace Through Faith
- Titus 34-5 (NKJV)

Savior toward man appeared, - not by works of righteousness which we have done,

Holy Spirit
20Ephesians 28-9

works, lest anyone should boast.
21James 224
Justified by Faith... But NOT by Faith ONLY!
James 224 (NKJV) You see that a man is
justified by works, and not by faith only.
22James 214-17
Justified By Faith... But NOT Faith ONLY
- James 214-17 (NKJV)
- What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says
he has faith but does not have works? Can faith
save him? - If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of
daily food, 16 and one of you says to them,
Depart in peace, be warmed and filled, but you
do not give them the things which are needed for
the body, what does it profit? - Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have
works, is dead.
23James 218-21
Justified By Faith... But NOT Faith ONLY
- James 218-21 (NKJV)
- But someone will say, You have faith, and I have
works. Show me your faith without your works,
and I will show you my faith by my works. - You believe that there is one God. You do well.
Even the demons believeand tremble! - But do you want to know, O foolish man, that
faith without works is dead? - Was not Abraham our father justified by works
when he offered Isaac his son on the altar?
24James 222-26
Justified By Faith... But NOT Faith ONLY
- James 222-26 (NKJV)
- Do you see that faith was working together with
his works, and by works faith was made perfect? - And the Scripture was fulfilled which
says, Abraham believed God, and it was accounted
to him for righteousness. And he was called the
friend of God. - You see then that a man is justified by works,
and not by faith only. - 26 For as the body without the spirit is
dead, so faith without works is dead also.
25Paul and James
Are Paul and James In Opposition?
Norman Geisler and Thomas Howe, When Critics Ask
(SP Publications, 1992), p. 528. James and
Paul would be contradictory if they were speaking
about the same thing, but there are many
indications in the text that they are not. Paul
is speaking about justification before God, while
James is talking about justification before
humans When he adds that Abraham was justified
by works (v. 21), he is speaking of what Abraham
did that could be seen by people, namely offer
his son Isaac on the altar (221-22).
26Justification Before Men?
Justification Before Men???
Seven Reasons Why James Is Talking About
Justification Before God
1. Can faith save him? (214) The profit
James is interested in is salvation. The subject
at hand is one's relationship with God, not one's
reputation among men.
27Justification Before Men?

2. So faith by itself, if it has no works, is
dead. (217) The term dead is introduced as
an antonym for profit and save. Faith without
works is dead, not dead before men, because
it will not profit (save).

3. Even the demons believe and tremble.
(219) James is not saying that demons tremble
because they lack justification before men. His
focus is on the impotence of the demon's faith to
help them before God.
29Justification Before Men?
Justification Before Men???
Seven Reasons Why James Is Talking About
Justification Before God
4. Was not Abraham justified by works, when he
offered his son Isaac upon the altar?
(221) This absolutely cannot be read as some
kind of justification before men since Abraham
and Isaac were the only ones on the mountain.

5. and the scripture was fulfilled which says,
it was reckoned to him as righteousness.
(223) Who in Genesis 156 did the reckoning?
God did, not men. And so James is saying that in
Genesis 22, just as in Genesis 15, Abraham was
justified before God, not men.

6. and he was called the friend of God.
(223) Who called Abraham God's friend? God
Himself did in Isaiah 418. Thus, Abrahams
offering of Isaac was about his relationship with
God, not men.

7. For as the body apart from the spirit is
dead, so faith apart from works is dead.
(226) James says that the body without the
spirit IS DEAD, not that it appears dead before
men. Likewise, faith without works IS DEAD. It
cannot save it does not justify.

Justification Before Men???
Seven Reasons Why James Is Talking About
Justification Before God
CONCLUSIONjustified before men is a forced
explanation. The only reason so many people
avoid the plain Bible teaching in James 2 is
because they insist on Luthers doctrine of
faith only!
34Two Systems Contrasted
Two Systems Contrasted
In Romans 3 4
Romans 327-28 (NKJV) 27 Where is boasting
then? It is excluded. By what law? Of works?
No, but by the law of faith. 28 Therefore we
conclude that a man is justified byfaith apart
from thedeeds of the law.
The Law of Works is a law of sinless perfection.
(Gal. 310-12) The Law of Faith is the gospel
of forgiveness. (Rom. 323-26)
35Galatians 310-12
The Law Of Works
- Galatians 310-12 (NKJV)
- For as many as are of the works of the law are
under the curse for it is written, Cursed is
everyone who does not continue in all things
which are written in the book of the law, to do
them. - But that no one is justified by the law in the
sight of God is evident, for the just shall live
by faith. - Yet the law is not of faith, but the man who
does them shall live by them.
36Romans 116
Two Systems Contrasted
In Romans 116
Two laws Rom 327 Not a system based on
sinlessness (works) but on forgiveness (grace)
through an obedient faith in Jesus Christ.(Rom
15 16-18 1626)
Romans 116 (NKJV) And if by grace, then it
is no longer of works otherwise grace is no
longer grace.
37Romans 616-18
Justification By Faith
- Romans 616-18 (NKJV)
- Do you not know that to whom you present
yourselves slaves to obey, you are that ones
slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to
death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? - But God be thanked that though you were slaves of
sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of
doctrine to which you were delivered. - And having been set free from sin, you became
slaves of righteousness.
38Hebrews 58-9

the things which He suffered. - And having been perfected, He became the author

39Romans 15 1626
Justification By Faith
Romans 15 1626 (NKJV) 15 Through Him we
have received grace and apostleship for obedience
to the faith among all nations for His name,
1626 but now made manifest, and by the
prophetic Scriptures made known to all nations,
according to the commandment of the everlasting
God, for obedience to the faith
402 Thess. 17-9
Obedience To The Gospel
- 2 Thess. 17-9 (NKJV)
- when the Lord Jesus will be revealed from heaven
with His mighty angels in flaming fire, - dealing out retribution to those who do not know
God and to those who do not obey the gospel of
our Lord Jesus. - These will pay the penalty of eternal
destruction, away from the presence of the Lord
and from the glory of His power,
41Romans 1016-17
Obedience To The Gospel
- Romans 1016-17 (NKJV)
- But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For
Isaiah says, Lord, who has believed our report? - So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by
the word of God.
42Galatians 326-27
The Scriptures Teach
Galatians 326-27 (NKJV) For you are all

just as Christ was raised from the dead by the
glory of the Father, even so we also should walk
in newness of life.

waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away
your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.
461 Peter 321
The Scriptures Teach
1 Peter 321 (KJV) The like figure
whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not
the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but
the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by
the resurrection of Jesus Christ
47Mark 1616
The Scriptures Teach
Mark 1616 (NKJV) He who believesand is
