The Beginning
  • In May of 1764, George Washington and his army
    attacked French soldiers near Fort Necessity.
  • The French fought back, and eventually in July,
    Washington surrendered.
  • This started the French and Indian War.
  • Washington as captain of the British army.

Who was fighting?
  • The French and Indian War was between the British
    and the French, who had Native American allies.

The Fighting
  • At Fort Duquesne, Braddock and his army fought
    against the French and their Native American
    allies. The British lost to the Indians and the
    French repeatedly.

  • The King appointed William Pitt to lead the
    British army. They started winning more battles
    because William Pitt gained the support of the
    Iroquois Indians.

A Dramatic Turn
  • In September 1759, British general, James Wolfe
    led his troops over the high cliffs in Quebec,
    Canada.
  • They caught the French and their commander, the
    Marquis de Montcalm, by surprise.
  • The British won the short battle, but it was also
    very deadly.
  • Their victory at Quebec led them to win the war.

The Treaty of Paris
  • The Treaty of Paris ended the French and Indian
    War in 1763.
  • This treaty divided up the land lost by the
    French.
  • Great Britain received all the land east of the
    Mississippi River, Canada, and Senegal.
  • Spain received the French lands west of the
    Mississippi River, Cuba, and the Philippines.
  • The only land France got to keep were the islands
    of Martinique, Guadeloupe, St. Pierre, and
    Miquelon.

The Consequences
  • When the British gained control of the Ohio River
    Valley, the Native Americans believed that the
    settlers would drive away the animals of the
    area.
  • Pontiac, the Ottawa chief, led the Native
    Americans to capture eight British forts.
  • British officers sent smallpox-infested blankets
    to the Native American tribes.
  • Most of the tribes got sick, so they negotiated
    peace treaties with the British.
