Title: Some information on supplements

1
Some information on supplements
  • (To accompany the notes and handout from class)

2
What has to be on a supplement label?
  • Statement of identity (e.g., "ginseng")
  • Net quantity of contents (e.g., "60 capsules")
  • Disclaimer statement "This statement has not been
evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.
This product is not intended to diagnose, treat,
    cure, or prevent any disease."
  • Directions for use (e.g., "Take one capsule
    daily.")
  • Supplement Facts panel (lists serving size,
    amount, and active ingredient)
  • Other ingredients in descending order of
    predominance and by common name.
  • Name and place of business or manufacturer,
    packer or distributor.

3
What this means . . .
  • Supplements have to tell you what they are, what
the main ingredient is, and how to take them
  • Supplements have a disclaimer on them to clearly
indicate their alleged benefits have NOT been
    evaluated
  • Bottom line Buyer beware!

4
  • On your outline I mention caution over
supplements that have multiple ingredients in
them and reference a Trimspa example. This is
not to be memorized but is to show just how much
stuff can be in a single product and how
outrageous some of the claims are.
  • This example is taken DIRECTLY from the Trimspa
website and is not manipulated in any way.
  • My editorial comments are in RED.
  • Be critical when you read it!

5
Trimspa Ingredients
  • Hoodia Gordonii (Hoo-dee-uh Gore-doh-nee) is a
    natural appetite suppressant, used for
generations by South African tribesmen to stave
off hunger during long hunting expeditions.
  • Glucosamine (Gloo-ko-so-meen) is an ingredient,
patented by TRIMSPA for weight loss, that
actually prolongs the amount of time glucose (or
blood sugar) stays within the bloodstream after
eating. This delay means that any extra insulin
can be used directly by the muscles for energy,
instead of being transferred too quickly to the
"warehouse," or fat cells. (Does this make any
sense at all based on what you know about
    cellular respiration and insulin?)

6
And more. . .
  • Green Tea Extract has long been known for its
thermogenic (what do you know about
    thermogenics?) -or heat generating-properties
that promote burning of fat. The polyphenols in
green tea also contain epigallocatechin gallate,
which has been known to significantly reduce food
intake and, subsequently, body weight in healthy
adults. It is rich in potent bioflavonoids that,
together with the polyphenols, provide the
antioxidants so vital to fighting free radicals.

7
And more. . .
  • Cocoa Extract contains 3,7 - dimethylxanthine,
also known as Theobromine, and is found naturally
in cocoa beans. Theobromine belongs to a class of
compounds known as Xanthines. The predominate use
of Theobromine is as a diuretic. (see handout for
    what diuretics do)
  • Citrus Naringin (Citrus Na-rin-gen) is a
powerful, naturally occurring citrus extract that
is known to curb the appetite (this is the second
appetite suppressant listed) while serving as a
source of soluble fiber. Like green tea extract,
it is an antioxidant that prevents free radical
damage and has also been shown to inhibit
enzymes-such as cytochrome P450-that are involved
in weight gain when found in the body in
    excessive amounts.

8
And more. . .
  • Chromium Chelaviteis an important nutrient that
aids in controlling glucose (blood sugar) and
carbohydrate cravings it also offers many other
benefits. It helps the body's insulin metabolize
fat, convert protein into muscle, and turn sugar
into energy (does this make any sense based on
what you know about cellular respiration and
insulin?!!), supporting weight loss and the
development of lean body mass. A lack of chromium
in the diet can result in weight gain,
sluggishness, and can trigger a craving for sugar
    and other carbohydrates.

9
And even more . . .
  • Vanadium (Van-a-dee-um) is a naturally occurring
appetite suppressant (this is the third appetite
suppressant mentioned) that can also induce
physiological effects similar to that of insulin
within the body. It assists the metabolism in
converting carbohydrates into energy while also
affecting the sense of taste and appetite,
resulting in less food intake and weight loss.

10
And more. . .
  • Glucomannan (Glu-co-ma-nan), derived from the
root of the Amorphophallus Konjac plant, is a
dietary fiber that assists in weight loss due to
its ability to create a sense of fullness, even
when taken in small amounts. Glucomannan reduces
the appetite significantly and helps to prevent
    overeating and lessen cravings.

11
And lastly . . .
  • Some other interesting combination supplements!

12
Red Bull
  • Glucuronolactone (sugar)
  • Caffeine
  • Niacin (B vitamin)
  • B6
  • B12
  • Sucrose (more sugar)
  • Glucose (more sugar)

How would the sugar provide energy? What do you
know about B vitamins and their role in cellular
respiration (what do they produce)? How about
caffeine?
13
Beer (Depressant) Caffeine (Stimulant) ??????
  • BE Primary ingredients
  • Beer (6.5 alcohol)
  • Caffeine

Our friends at Budweiser are just making things
easier by pre-mixing. The same thing happens
when we mix energy drinks with liquor. The
alcohol makes you sleepy but the caffeine is a
stimulant to keep you awake.
