Who is Giovanni Boccaccio?
  • Giovanni Boccaccio was a great writer of the
    renaissance.
  • He is known as the father of modern writing.
  • Shakespeare and other famous writers were
    influenced by his writings.

Childhood Young Adulthood
  • Was born in either Certaldo or Tuscany.
  • Lived from 1313- 1375.
  • He was the son of a Florentine banker.
  • In the 1320s Giovanni was tutored by Giovanni
    Mazzuoli and was introduced to Dantes work.
  • Later he and his father moved to Naples.

  • In Naples his father was appointed to the head of
    the Neapolitan branch of the bank.
  • Giovanni became an apprentice and didnt like it.
  • Decided to go to law school. Once again he didnt
    like it.
  • In the 1330s he had two children Mario and
    Giulio. Later he found his true passion which was
    poetry.

Where was Boccaccio most influential?
  • One of his most influential writings was the
    Decameron. With this story he influenced
    countries like Italy, France, and England.
  • He was also was a diplomat of public affairs.
  • He influenced much of Italy especially Florence.

The Decameron
  • The Story was made (1350-1353).
  • It is a story of three men and seven women left
    the city for Villa. For ten days one hundred
    stories were told.
  • This work is Boccaccios greatest and was
    recognized through out Europe during that time.

  • The Decameron is a very valuable piece of work
    for our time because he wrote one of the only
    detailed story about the plague in Europe.
  • Giovanni's Decameron give us an idea of how bad
    the black plague really was.

On Famous Women
  • This is 106 short stories of biographies on
    famous women.
  • Some of the women in the book are Eve- First
    woman Opis-Wife of Saturn Venus- Queen of
    Cyprus Dieanira- Wife of Hercules.
  • It was the first type of books on just women.
  • This was composed from (1360- 1376).

  • It was made (1354- 1355).
  • It was Boccaccios most problematic text.
  • The Corbaccio had been read up until the
    ninetieth century.
  • The most confusing part of the text is the
    title. The title Corbaccio has many different
    meanings in various languages.

  • Many of Giovannis writings are recognized all
    over the world.
  • His writings during his time were mainly
    recognized in England, France, and especially
    Italy. In England his writings influenced
    Shakespeare and other writers.

Effects On Renaissance
  • Giovanni Boccaccio had an influential role in the
    renaissance. With his writing of the Decameron he
    informed the world about the black death and its
    horrible stories.

    women in books. He was the first person to
    publish a book focusing only on women. The book
    was called On Famous Women.
  • Lastly Giovanni Boccacco was a humanist
    emphasizing the study of Greek translations.
