4The Isle of Mans symbol of independence is the
Three Legs of Man. It is an ancient symbol
derived from a design representing the wheels of
the sun and was used in pagan worship. Its
origin in the Isle of Man is uncertain but one
theory is that Alexander III of Scotland adopted
it when he gained control of the Isle of Man at
the end of Norse rule in 1256. It was a popular
symbol with Celts across northern Europe. The
oldest representation of the Three Legs in
existence is on the Manx Sword of State. There
is much local argument about which way the legs
run. The official form runs clockwise, (i.e.
Sunwise). The modern Coat of Arms of the Isle of
Man shows the Three Legs topped by a crown and
flanked by a peregrine falcon and a raven both
birds chosen because of their historical
significance.
5Tynwald, the worlds oldest continuous
parliament, celebrated its millennium in 1979.
It consists of the House of Keys, whose 24
members (MHKs) are elected by the people, and
the Legislative Council, whose nine members
(MLCs) are elected by the House of Keys. On the
third Tuesday each month, the branches (Keys and
Council) come together to sit as Tynwald to
decide matters of policy and finance.
6The Manx Language
Manx Gaelic is a Celtic language with links to
Scottish and Irish Gaelic. It was universally
spoken until the 19th Century when it went into
decline. The language virtually disappeared but
is now growing again thanks to the Manx Language
Society (Yn Cheshaght Ghailckagh) and the
Department of Education. Manx Gaelic can now be
studied from pre-school to A Level.
