Intro
  • What makes this an ethical issue?
  • Is it right for a company to legally use a
substance in a product even if they know that it
could harm the user of the product?
  • Is it right for them not to inform the consumer
of the potential health risks associated with the
substances used to make the product?
  • Who are the moral agents?

  • Responsibility
  • Government -- The US government is responsible
for allowing this product to reach the market
with this ingredient. Countries France and
Belgium have already removed sodium fluoride
    products from their markets effectively
    eliminating the risk to consumers.
  • Corporation --It is unacceptable for them to use
this ingredient in their product because it is a
known fact that sodium fluoride causes many
harmful effects to the body. This information is
readily available and should be used as a basis
for removing the ingredient from the product.

Europe, and there has been multiple studies that
have proven this chemical dangerous. Yet, many US
companies still use it in many of their products.

Conclusion
  • Both the corporation and government regulation
should be held to a higher standard
  • Perfect world, corporation would have higher
moral standards to keep harmful substances out of
    their products
  • Not perfect world, so FDA needs to hold the bar
    higher
  • Need a larger budget and a proactive approach to
    discovering harmful ingredients
