Title: A Statistical Analysis of the Westminster College Golf Program
1A Statistical Analysis of the Westminster College
Golf Program
2The Problem
- We WANT to win.
- We arent WINNING.
- While we have posted some good scores over the
course of the season, we havent been able to
place well as a team. - Is this a result of being unlucky and having poor
timing, or is it because we just arent good
enough?
3Data Collection
- All data was collected by examining fall season
records for the Frontier Conference. - I recorded each male player with his respective
team, along with 9 18-hole scores. - Once the scores were recorded, I calculated the
average and standard deviation for future
calculations.
4Data
Here is a small excerpt from the raw data I
collected
5Confidence Intervals
- Once the raw data was compiled, I computed the
player confidence intervals (at a 95 level). - Then, I compiled the lowest 4 scores from both
ends of the confidence interval to create a team
confidence interval. - This shows, with a 95 confidence level, what
scores the team is likely to post on any given
day.
6Team Confidence Intervals
7Hypothesis Test
- Generally at Frontier Conference events, the
individual medalists score around even par per
round (72). - My goal is to individually medal next season, so
I want to know if I need to improve to reach this
level. - Test the hypothesis that my scoring average is 72
or lower at a 90 confidence level.
8Hypothesis Test
Test the claim, at a 90 confidence level, that
my average score is 72 or less. Scores in last 9
rounds 78 75 75 76 69 71 71 76
71 x 73.56 s 3.09 n 9 Ho m 72 Ha m lt
72 a .1 73.56 - 72 t -----------------------
3.09 / sqrt(9) t 1.515 Critical Value t
1.397 (right tailed test) Reject Ho. The sample
data support the claim that my mean score is
greater than 72 at a 90 confidence level.
9Conclusion
- Based on the testing
- The team needs to improve if we want to win
tournaments, its not just bad luck/timing. - Individually, I would need to improve to win
medalist honors at future tournaments.
