Title: To the Point on Joints

1
To the Point on Joints!
  • The Story of Your Skeletal System

2
Your Bones
  • What would happen if you didnt have bones?
Well, I guess youd be floppy like a beanbag.
Could you walk? Could you stand up? No way.
Without bones, youd be a puddle of skin and guts
    on the floor!

3
Support
  • Bones have two functions
  • It provides structure to help you stand up-up-up!
  • Other bones protect all the wonderful and soft
insides of your body. Can you name some other
    things inside your body? Hmmm...

4
Your System
  • You know, your body is a system. Whats a system
you say? Well, its kind of like a computer.
You have a monitor, keyboard, mouse (eek!), and a
central processing unit that ALL work together.
But you still call it a computer. Well, you have
a clavicle, radius, patella, a spine, rib cage
and the list goes on and on. You can list 206
bones in your body, but you still call all them
    the skeletal system!

Systems
6
Locomotion
  • What is locomotion? Like an engine pulls a
train, your bones (with the help of your muscles)
pull your body along. Walking, running and
skipping is movement and movement is LOCOMOTION!

7
Types of Joints
  • You have four types of joints
  • Joints allow your body to move in many ways.
  • Hinge joints
  • Ball and socket joints
  • Gliding joints
  • Joints that Pivot
  • I wonder which bones do what?

8
Hinge Joints
  • Some joints open and close like the hinge
fastened to a door. Your knees and elbows are
    great examples of hinged joints.

9
Ball and Socket
  • With this joint, you have the most movement of
all. The hips and shoulders have bones in which
the round end of a long bone fit into the hollow
    of another bone. Well, well

10
Gliding Joints
  • Then you have gliding joints that slide back and
forth. Some rocking chairs have gliding hinges.

11
Lets Glide!!
  • The bones in the wrists and ankles slide against
each other in a gliding motion. Try out this
joint by holding either right above your wrist or
ankle and moving it to the right and left, and up
and down. The gliding joint gives your wrists and
ankles lots of freedom so you can really move
    around.

Pivoting Joints
  • Pivot joints let you twist or rotate from side to
side. Move your head from left to right. Now
you are pivoting your head. You can also twist
    and bend at the waist.

How do you muscles help?
  • With all the work that your skeletal system has
to do support, protect, locomotion (movement),
hinge, glide, and pivot, it needs help.

14
Muscles
  • Muscles move cows, snakes, worms, and humans.
Muscles move you! Without muscles you couldnt
open your mouth, speak, shake hands walk, or move
your food through your digestive system. You
have over 630 muscles that move you. Muscles
    cant push. They pull.
