20Im Staying Home from School Today by Kenn
Nesbitt Im staying home from school
today.Id rather be in bed,pretending that I
have a painthats pounding in my head.Ill say
I have a stomachache.Ill claim Ive got the
flu.Ill shiver like Im coldand hold my breath
until Im blue. Ill fake a cough. Ill fake a
sneeze.Ill say my throat is sore.If necessary,
I can throwa tantrum on the floor.Im sure Ill
get away with it.Of that, theres little
doubt. But even so, I really hopemy students
dont find out.
21My Parents Are Pretending by Ted Scheu Im
pretty sure my parents are pretending they are

that little trick. You blow your nose and hold
your headand claim your brain is breaking. And
so, a pro like me would knowmy folks are clearly
faking. A little thing I learned in
schoolconvinced me I am rightMy parents are
supposed to meetmy principal tonight.
22Now That I Can Read I used to need somebody To
sit and read to me. I'd look at every page they
read And listen carefully. But now that I am in
first grade, I'm filling up a shelf With
stories, poems, and other books That I can read
myself.
23Reading A story is a special thingThe ones that
I have readThey do not stay inside the
booksThey stay inside my head.
