3President BensonQuote 1
- The record of the Nephite history just prior to
the Saviors visit reveals many parallels to our
own day as we anticipate the Saviors second
coming
4Pres. BensonQuote 2
- In the Book of Mormon we find a pattern for
preparing for the Second Coming. A major
portion of the book centers on the few decades
just prior to Christs coming to America. - By careful study of that time period, we can
determine why some were destroyedand what
brought others to stand at the temple in
Bountiful and thrust their hands into the wounds
of his hands and feet - Can anyone doubt that this book was meant for us
and that in it we find great power, great comfort
and great protection?
5Helaman 13
- And it came to pass that in this year (6 BC)
there was one Samuel, a Lamanite, came into the
land of Zarahemla, and began to preach unto the
people. - And it came to pass that he did preach, many
days, repentance unto the people, and they did
cast him out,
6From the Wall
- And he said unto them Behold, I, Samuel, a
Lamanite, do speak the words of the Lord which he
doth put into my heart - Call to repentance, combined with Three Major
Prophecies
7Prophecy 1 The Death Sentence
- Hel 135,10
- the sword of justice hangeth over this people
and four hundred years pass not away save the
sword of justice falleth upon this people - and there shall be those of the fourth
generation who shall live, of your enemies, to
behold your utter destruction
8Prophecy 2 Fate of Zarahemla
- Hel. 13 14
- when ye shall cast out the righteous from among
you, then shall ye be ripe for destruction yea,
wo be unto this great city, because of the
wickedness and abominations which are in her.
9- Zarahemla
- wo be unto this great city, because of the
wickedness and abominations which are in her. - ye do cast out the prophets, and do mock them,
and cast stones at them, and do slay them - Ye do always remember your riches
- if it were not for the righteous who are in this
great city, behold, I would cause that fire
should come down out of heaven and destroy it. - And there weresharp lightningsand the City of
Zarahemla did take fire
- Gen. 18 Sodom and Gomorah
- Their sin is very grievous
- And (the town) called unto Lotwe will deal worse
with thee, than with them - Put nets over their fruit trees to keep the poor
out - And (the Lord said) If I find in Sodom fifty
righteous with in the City, then I will spare all
the place - Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and Gomorrah
brimstone and fire

12Additional PropheciesConcerning Zarahemla
- Helaman 13 3
- 30 Yea, behold, the anger of the Lord is already
kindled against you behold, he hath cursed the
land because of your iniquity. - 31 And behold, the time cometh that he curseth
your riches, that they become slippery, that ye
cannot hold them and in the days of your poverty
ye cannot retain them.
13Question
- How do, or how will, the wicked fail to hold on
to their riches?
14Prophecy 3Signs of the Saviors Birth and Death
- Strong Righteous minority
- Many spiritual signs and gifts
- Increase in wickedness
- Conversion of Many Lamanites
- Prophecy of a night with no darkness
- Denial of signs and wonders in the heavens
- Great Storms and natural destructions
- Destruction of the wicked
15Elder OaksApril Conference
- While we are powerless to alter the fact of the
Second Coming and unable to know its exact time,
we can accelerate our own preparation and try to
influence the preparation of those around us. - A parable that contains an important and
challenging teaching on this subject is
the parable of the ten virgins. - The arithmetic of this parable is chilling. The
ten virgins obviously represent members of
Christ's Church, for all were invited to the
wedding feast and all knew what was required to
be admitted when the bridegroom came. But only
half were ready when he came.
16Elder Oaks Cont.
- "Stand ye in holy places, and be not moved, until
the day of the Lord come for behold, it cometh
quickly"? (DC 878). - What are those "holy places"? Surely they include
the temple and its covenants faithfully kept.
Surely they include a home where children are
treasured and parents are respected. - Surely the holy places include our posts of duty
assigned by priesthood authority, including
missions and callings faithfully fulfilled in
branches, wards, and stakes.
