1Path Out of Extreme Poverty Parbatis Story
2Parbati her family lived in the slums of
Kolkata, India.
3They were so poor that they only ate a meal of
rice twice a day.
4- More than 800 million people go to bed hungry
every day...300 million are children. - More than one billion people still use unsafe
sources of drinking water.
5In addition, they were too poor to send their two
children to school.
6- Around the world, a total of 114 million children
do not get even a basic education. - In some deeply impoverished nations less than
half of the children are in primary school and
under 20 percent go to secondary school.
7Parbatis husband pulled a rickshaw as their only
source of income earning less than 1 a day.
8- Over 1/6 of humanity lives in extreme poverty or
on less than 1/day. - Most living in extreme poverty are unable to
engage in meaningful and sustainable income
generating activities.
9Parbatis husband became ill with Tuberculosis.

year. - Each year, approximately 300 to 500 million
people are infected with malaria. Approximately
three million people die as a result. - Everyday HIV/AIDS kills 6,000 people.
11Parbati was forced to pull the rickshaw for
survival.
