1
reggae
  • Protest music of Jamaica
  • Ghetto music
  • Fusion -- a blend of African, Cuban, Spanish,
    Jamaican, and American influence

2
reggae
  • based on American soul music but with inverted
    rhythms and prominent bass lines.
  • Rooted in Kingston's slums, reggae is the
expression of Jamaica's poorest blacks. Many
    performers are RASTAFARIANS.
  • The themes of reggae lyrics include
    Rastafarianism, political protest, and the
    "rudie" (hooligan hero).

3
Rastafarians
  • members of a Jamaican messianic movement dating
    back to the 1930s.
  • According to Rastafarian belief the only true God
is the late Ethiopian emperor HAILE SELASSIE
(originally known as Ras Tafari), and Ethiopia is
    the true Zion.
  • Rastafarians claim that white Christian preachers
and missionaries have perverted the Scriptures to
conceal the fact that Adam and Jesus were black.

4
Rastafarians
  • Their rituals include the use of marijuana and
    the chanting of revivalist hymns.
  • REGGAE music is the popular music of the
    movement.
  • The Rastafarians, who stress black separatism,
have exercised some political influence in
    Jamaica

5
reggae
  • Reggae influenced a generation of white
    musicians--notably Paul Simon and Eric
Clapton--and reggae modes can often be detected
in 1980s and 1990s rock and rap music.
  • The merging of rap and reggae into a style called
dub or toasting, as well as the appearance of
younger performers such as Ziggy Marley (Bob's
son), revitalized reggae in the late 1980s and
    1990s.

6
Bob Marley
  • Bob Marley (1945-81) and his group, the Wailers,
were largely responsible for the widespread
    popularity of reggae.
  • took REGGAE out of Jamaica and disseminated it to
    the world.

7
Bob Marley
  • In 1964, Marley formed his vocal group the
Wailers which included Peter Tosh and Bunny
Livingston, both of whom went on to enjoy solo
    careers.

8
  • In 1967, Marley converted to the RASTAFARIAN
religion, which became a dominant theme in his
    music.

9
Bob Marley
  • critically acclaimed American debut album Catch a
Fire, and its follow up, Burnin' (which contained
the hits "Get Up, Stand Up" and "I Shot the
Sheriff"--popularized by Eric Clapton), were both
    released in 1973.

10
Jimmy Cliff
  • The film The Harder They Come (1973) brought the
    style to the United States.

11
Peter Tosh
12
  • Get Up, Stand Up (for your rights, dont give up
the fight, now we see the light)
