7
  • Overshadowed by the enormous amount of writing
on the Second World War, the First World War has
generally been accorded a readership much smaller
than it deserves. That attitude has prevailed in
the United States, because the period of our
participation was too short to affect the whole
    of American society. (xxv)

8
  • We Americans, not known for false modesty
regarding our achievements, are sometimes prone
to claim that we won the war. Such an attitude
sits poorly with the French and British, whose
staggering losses between 1914 and 1918 dwarf
those of the United States. And yet it is safe
to say that had it not been for the United States
entering the war in April of 1917, Germany and
Austria would have emerged victorious. (xxvi)
