3What is BadgerCat?
- BadgerCat is a special presentation of OCLC
WorldCat that creates a Wisconsin view of
WorldCat with the holdings of nearly 500
Wisconsin libraries.
4What is WorldCat?
- WorldCat is the worldwide union catalog created
and maintained by over 9,000 member institutions.
It contains almost 82 million bibliographic and
ownership records of contributing libraries. It
is the largest and most comprehensive database of
its kind.
5Who is in the group?
6Public Libraries in BadgerCat/WorldCat as of
April, 2007
73 Librarians talk about BadgerCat and WorldCat
8WorldCat Basic Training
Sue Mobley, Reedsburg Public Library
9Who do we need to train?
- Reference Staff
- In smaller libraries, these staff members are
less likely to be professionally trained
librarians. - Staff dont always have time to play with new
databases. - Public
- The public is often amazed to learn that they
can look at the holdings of other library systems
as well as their own.
10Why worry about training?
- Training ensures that staff and public alike are
getting the most from WorldCat AND from the
library! - What staff dont understand they wont use.
- What staff dont use they wont be comfortable
with. - What staff arent comfortable with they wont
recommend to the public.
11Staff Training
Goal 1 To make staff more aware of
Worldcat -Versatility of Database -Availability
of Features -Ease of Use Goal 2 To encourage
staff to use WorldCat Goal 3 Teach staff how
to train the public in WorldCat
12Staff Training Ideas
Training Sessions - Like today One on One
Practice Reference Skills Worksheets Encourage
staff to familiarize themselves with WorldCat
13WorldCat for Library Patrons
Goals - To make the public aware of WorldCat
features and accessibility - To encourage the
public to use WorldCat in the library and at
