Job Description
  • A dental lab technician makes dentures, crowns,
    bridges, and dental braces.
  • You use different impressions on many different
    patients teeth and gums in order to make a
    model/cast of the patients mouth.
  • There are four different specialist areas,
    Prosthodontic, Conservation, Orthodontic, and
    Maxillo-Facial.

Needed High School Courses
  • If you are interested in working in the dental
    lab technician field, all that is required in
    order to get into a dental program at a college
    is a high school diploma, however, in order to be
    successful in the field, you must be able to work
    with your hands, be able to work independently,
    be able to meet deadlines, and pay attention to
    detail

College Courses
  • Most Two-Year Colleges offer education and
    training as well as technical colleges,
    vocational schools, universities, and dental
    schools.
  • Dental Laboratory Technicians need to pass an
    exam that evaluates their knowledge of the skills
    needed to know.

Certification and Licensure
  • Technicians can be certified by passing the
    examination which evaluates the technical skills
    needed in order to become a member of the
    National Board of Dental Laboratory Technicians.
  • No license is currently required.

Employment Opportunities
  • As of now, there is a demand for dental
    laboratory technicians.
  • Most dental lab techs. Work in commercial dental
    labs, which can employ anywhere from two to
    two-hundred people.

  • The starting salary for a dental technician is
    around 7.05 an hour.
  • Depending on your skill level, the average dental
    technician can make up to 16.38 and hour.
