Hizbollah Within Lebanon

• Lebanons government considers Hizbollah a
  resistance movement.
  
• General feeling-Hizbollah is saving Lebanon from
  Israeli encroachment in the southern regions of
  Lebanon.
  
• In 2006-Hizbollah held 35 seats of the 128 member
  parliament in Lebanon.
  
• Hizbollah is considered to be the most powerful
  political force within Lebanon.
  
• Lebanese Government allows Hizbollah to operate
  freely within the country as long as the
  organization adheres to Lebanese laws.

Israels Counterterrorism/war with Lebanon and
Hizbollah

• Since 1978-Many peace agreements and treaties
  between Israel and Lebanon fail-aggression
  continues.
  
• Israel strategy-cut off the ability for Hizbollah
  to receive support from Iran and Syria.
  
• Israel counterterrorism is more of a war of
  survival air, land, and sea attacks. Israel is
  non-submissive and instantly retaliate to
  Hizbollah attacks.

United Nations Security Counciland the European
Union

• 2004-UN Security Council Resolution 1559
• Goal is to disband and disarm any Lebanese and
  non-Lebanese militia (includes Hizbollah)
  
• To bring Lebanon and Israel into complete
  compliance with UN Resolution 425 (1978- which
  called for Israels withdraw from area known as
  Blue Line)
• 2005-European Union states there is clear
  evidence that Hizbollah has perpetrated
  terrorist activities and names Hizbollah a
  terrorist organization.
• 2008-Lebanons Prime Minister Siniora says the
  only way to disarm Hizbollah is for Israel to
  completely withdraw from area of Shebaa Farms.

United States (Efforts?)

• 1983-US Marine barracks attack prompts the
  FBICIA to watch actions of Hizbollah
  
• U.S. implements actions/sanctions against Iran
  and Syria to curtail support (funding) of
  Hizbollah.
  
• July 2000-FBI uncovered large fundraising scams
  by Hizbollah operatives in the U.S. (many
  arrested) and FBI continues to try to prevent any
  money making abilities Hizbollah pursues within
  the U.S.
• U.S. State Department places Hizbollah on the
  list of Foreign Terrorist Organization
  
• September 2001- Bush Doctrine President Bush
  vows to pursue ANY nation that harbors
  terrorist.
  
• 2006-2007 U.S. State Department shows the U.S.
  pledged more than 1 million dollars assistance to
  efforts to rebuild Lebanon.
  
• Power of Hizbollah remains strong, Lebanese
  Government cant force Hizbollah out without
  strong backing from U.S. and allies-which is a
  commitment no one wants to make. With Iranian and
  Syrian backing, it is believed that Hizbollah
  could become THE next major threat to United
  States and its allies.
