south-central Europe, to the immediate north of
the Mediterranean Sea. They extend for almost 700
miles in a crescent shape from the coastline of
southern France (near Monaco) into Switzerland,
then through northern Italy and into Austria, and
down through Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and
Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro - then ending
in Albania on the rugged coastline of the

8Austria
- Austria, officially the Republic of Austria, is a
landlocked country in Central Europe. It borders
both Germany and the Czech Republic to the north,
Slovakia and Hungary to the east, Slovenia and
Italy to the south, and Switzerland and
Liechtenstein to the west. - Austria is a parliamentary representative
democracy comprising nine federal states and is
one of six European countries that have declared
permanent neutrality and one of the few countries
that includes the concept of everlasting
neutrality in its constitution. The capital of
Austria is Vienna. - A neutral country takes no side in a war between
other parties, and in return hopes to avoid being
attacked by any of them. However, Austria has
joined the EU. - The official language spoken in Austria is
German. However, certain regions of the country
may speak different languages for example the
people living near Italy may speak Italian.
9Austria
The population of Austria is 8,316,487.
Approximately 74 of Austrians are Roman
Catholic, 5 are Protestant, the rest belongs to
other faiths. It is about twice the size of
Switzerland. The landlocked country shares nation
al borders with Switzerland (164 km) and the tiny
principality of Liechtenstein (35 km) to the
west. As a geographic feature, the Alps literally
overshadow other landform regions. Just over 28
of Austria is moderately hilly or flat

11Switzerland
Switzerland is a landlocked country of roughly
7.5 million people in Western Europe with an area
of 41,285 km². Switzerland is a federal republic
consisting of 26 states. Switzerland is bordered
by Germany, France, Italy, Austria and
Liechtenstein. Switzerland is multilingual and
has four national languages German, French,
Italian and Romansh. Switzerland has a long hist
ory of neutrality it has not been at war since
1815 and hosts many international
organizations, including the Red Cross, the World
Trade Organization and one of the U.N.'s two
European offices. It has no intention of joining
the EU, so remains an island of neutrality,
completely surrounded by the EU.
With an area of 41,285 square kilometres
(15,940 sq mi), Switzerland is a relatively small
country. The population is about 7.5 million,
resulting in an average population density of 182
people per square kilometre (472/sq mi). However,
the more mountainous southern half of the country
is far more sparsely populated than this average,
while the northern half has a somewhat greater
density, as it comprises more hospitable hilly
terrain, partly forested and partly cleared, as
well as several large lakes. Switzerland comprise
s three basic topographical areas the Swiss
Alps, the Swiss plateau or "middleland", and the
Jura mountains along the northwestern border with
France.
The Alps are a high mountain range running across
the central-south of the country, comprising
about 60 of the country's total area.

13The Alps
- Three major ranges of the Alps the Northern
Calcareous Alps, Central Alps, and Southern
Calcareous Alps run west to east through
Austria. The Central Alps, which consist largely
of a granite base, are the largest and highest
ranges in Austria. The Central Alps run from
Tyrol to approximately the Styria-Lower Austria
border and include areas that are permanently
glaciated in the Ötztal Alps on the
TyroleanItalian border and the Hohe Tauern in
East Tyrol and Carinthia. - The Alps serve as a watershed for Europe's three
major kinds of weather systems that influence
Austrian weather. The Atlantic maritime climate
from the northwest, the mediterranean climate
to the South, and the Central European
continental climate to the East. - The Atlantic maritime, or British climate is
characterized by low pressure fronts, mild air
from the Gulf Stream, and precipitation. It has
the greatest influence on the northern slopes of
the Alps, the Northern Alpine Foreland, and the
Danube valley. - Given the importance of Alpine skiing for the
Austrian tourist industry, December is the month
during which the weather is watched with the
greatest anticipation.
14Alps
- The Alps tower up to 4,808 meters and span across
France, Germany, Switzerland, Liechtenstein,
Italy, Austria and Slovenia.
- The Alps are generally divided into the Western
Alps and the Eastern Alps. The division is along
the line between Lake Constance and Lake Como,
following the Rhine. The Western Alps are higher,
but their central chain is shorter and curved
they are located in Italy, France and
Switzerland. The Eastern Alps belong to Austria,
Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Slovenia and
Switzerland. -
- The Alps are relatively young fold mountains
arose as a result of the pressure exerted on
sediments of the Tethys Ocean basin as its
Mesozoic and early Caenozoic strata were pushed
against the stable Eurasian landmass by the
northward-moving African landmass. - The Alps are popular both in summer and in winter
as a destination for sightseeing and sports.
Winter sports (alpine and Nordic skiing,
tobogganing, snowshoeing, ski tours) can be
practised in most regions from December to April,
while in summer the Alps are popular with hikers,
mountain bikers, para-gliders, mountaineers,
while the many lakes attract swimmers, sailors
and surfers.

Snow dusts the peaks of the Alps on December 11,
2004. North of the Alps, clouds cover France,
Germany and Slovenia. South of the Alps, clear
skies dominate most of the image, leaving the Po
River valley and peninsular Italy showing
clearly. Can you pick out the main valleys in th
e Alps? How?
Why are there snow deposits on the peaks of the
Alps only?

17Liechtenstein
The Principality of Liechtenstein is a tiny,
doubly landlocked alpine country in Western
Europe, bordered by Switzerland to its west and
by Austria to its east. Mountainous, it is a
winter sports centre, although it is perhaps best
known as a region of "tax haven". Despite this,
it is not heavily urbanised. Many cultivated
fields and small farms characterise its landscape
both in the north and in the south. It is the
smallest German-speaking country in the world.
The total area of the Liechtenstein is 160.4 km2
and has a population of 35,365. Liechtenstein is
the sixth-smallest independent nation in the
world, by land area. The five independent
countries smaller than Liechtenstein are Vatican
City, Monaco, Nauru, Tuvalu, and San Marino.
Liechtenstein is situated in the Upper Rhine
valley of the European Alps. The entire western
border of Liechtenstein is formed by the river.
Measured north to south, the country is only
about 24 km (15 mi) long. In its eastern portion
, Liechtenstein rises to higher altitudes its
highest point, the Grauspitz, is 2,599 m
(8,527 ft). Despite its alpine location,
prevailing southerly winds make the climate of
Liechtenstein comparatively mild. In winter, the
mountain slopes are well suited to winter sports.
It is the only country with a predominantly
German-speaking population that does not share a
border with the Federal Republic of Germany.
