Title: CLEAN AIR

1
CLEAN AIR
  • ITS ONLY YOUR FUTURE

2
What do you like to do?
3
Is it air or is it poison?
4
Pollution Dangers Cast Shadow over 2008 Olympics
  • Is Beijing dangerous to athletes' health? With
the prospect of athletes running marathons and
cycling in Beijing's smog and pollution-laden
air, environmentalists and experts in sports
medicine are concerned about the health risks
associated with the Olympic Games in China.

5
GUESS WHERE THIS IS?
6
BIGGEST CULPRITS?
7
Diesel its not the clean fuel we think it is.
  • Diesel exhaust contains 20-100 times more
particles than gasoline exhaust. These particles
carry absorbed cancer causing substances known as
    polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH)s.
  • Exposure is no fun.
  • Irritation of the eyes, nose and throat
  • Lightheadedness
  • Heartburn
  • Headache
  • Weakness, numbness and tingling in the
    extremities
  • Chest tightness
  • Wheezing
  • Vomiting

8
Coal a 19th century idea that has run its time.
9
Where do we get our electricity?
For Sweden, thats just the beginning! They have
committted to get 60 of their power from
renewables.
10
Where do we get our electricity?
In Utah 95 comes from...
COAL
11
THE TRUE COST OF COAL
Health
  • Mercury is a serious neurotoxin
  • 40 of all mercury in our environment comes from
    coal-fired power plants. Forty-six states,
including Utah, have issued fish consumption
advisories because of high mercury levels.
Between 316,588 and 637,233 children each year
have blood mercury levels high enough to cause
    permanent IQ loss..
  • Human health consequences
  • Coal is responsible for 24,000 premature deaths,
    38,200 non-fatal heart attacks, 16,200 cases of
bronchitis and 554,000 asthma attacks. UMWA
estimates that 1,500 miners still dies every year
    from black lung disease.

12
Where is your future?
13
Things you can do --
  • Encourage your parents to limit unnecessary car
    trips. Walk or bike instead.
  • Use TRAX or the bus.
  • Encourage your parents to switch to a high
mileage vehicle. Big trucks and SUVs contribute
    more pollution and waste
  • Cut back on energy use at home. Look at solar for
    your roof.
  • Clean is green is healthy!
