Title: Class Projects
1 SunOS Solaris 8.0
Mohammed Sylla
2Introduction
- Sun Microsystems, Inc., maker of the UNIX
operating system Solaris, was founded in 1982 by
current CEO Scott McNelley and two other friends.
- The company, which worth 13 Billions today, is
based in Mountain view, California. - Other good products from Sun are
- The universal JAVA language
- ultraSPARC systems, a RISC machine.
UNIX Overview
Solaris 8.0
versus WIN 2000
versus other UNIXs
Conclusion
3 An Overview of UNIX
- UNIX was written using the C language by ATT
Bell Lab in 1969. - UNIX is a multitasking, multi-user Operating
System (OS) widely used to run workstations, Web
and/or File servers on x86, RISC and mainframes. - The main components of a UNIX OS
- a kernel, the core of UNIX.
- File systems
- Shells, the command line interfaces
- X windows, the GUI interface
4An Overview of UNIX
- Since 1970, commercial UNIX Operating Systems
have been available. - Currently these 5 versions are the most
established - SunOS Solaris
- IBM AIX
- HP UNIX
- Tru64 UNIX
- UnixWare 7
Tonight, well see one the most powerful UNIX
system Solaris 8.0, the latest UNIX OS from Sun.
5Solaris 8.0, the latest SunOS
- Solaris 8.0 comes with SunOS, a UNIX operating
system, and several windowing systems
(OpenWindows, CDE, GNOME Desktop, KDE, etc..). - It supports
- multithreading computing
- Symmetric Multi-Processing (SMP)
- Centralized network administration
- A powerful emulator to run Windows applications
- TCP/IP, NFS, and other network protocols.
For decades, Sun has proclaimed that the network
is the computer. GARTNER, CNET.COM
6Key Features of Solaris 8.0
- Live Upgrade
- While Solaris 8.0 is running in full load, a
new kernel, the heart of the UNIX OS, can be
built and put in use without the need to reboot
the system. - IP multi-patching
- New network interface cards can be installed and
put in use while Solaris 8.0 is up and running. - The system will automatically switch to a
different network/internet connection if the
current one goes down.
7Why Choose Solaris 8.0
- Lower downtime (than any other x86 OS)
- With Solaris 8.0, Sun has introduced a System
management tool called Dynamic Reconfiguration
(DR), the first of its kind. - With DR, any hardware components (CPU, hard
drives, Memory, Video/Sound card, SCSI devices,
etc ) can be replaced/upgraded and there is no
need to shutdown and/or reboot the system. - Automatic System recovery
- When an hardware component fails, the system will
automatically detect this problem. Then it will
reboot itself and take the appropriate action
reinstall/disable the failing devices.
8Why Choose Solaris 8.0
- Reduced cost of ownership
- Solaris 8.0 is free for home use and work on
computers with capacity of 8 or fewer CPUs. - Solaris 8.0 offers data-center availability,
reliability and easy service at a fraction of the
cost of mainframe computers. - Universal Operating environment
- Solaris 8.0 can support concurrent multiple
language environment up to 37 languages.
9Connectivity to the World
- iPlanet to access securely all your network
resources (allows 50 millions entries/server) - Suns PC NetLink lets you access all native
windows NT services (printing, directories/files).
- It also makes Solaris 8.0 appears like a
Window OS on the Window network. - Supports PDA and Cellular Phone.
- supports XML and Java 2.
10Solaris 8.0 HW Requirements
- Please, check that your HW components are on
Suns HCL (Hardware Compatibility List). - Same Requirement as your basic Window OS
- 64 MB of RAM
- At least 400 MB Hard Drive space
- Diskette and CD-ROM Drives
- Compatible Video and Sound Cards
11What comes with Solaris 8.0?
- GNOME Desktop (GNU Network Objet Environment)
- Oracle 8i, the most powerful database manager.
- Star office, a nice German productivity package.
- Forte Software for JAVA development.
- iPlanet, a powerful directory service software.
- A migration work bench (to migrate from MS SQL on
Window NT to Oracle 8i on Solaris 8.0) - Solaris Software companion CD.
12Limitations of Solaris 8.0
- Like any UNIX OS, the installation of Solaris is
not trivial. - It does not support as many Hardware devices as
Microsoft Windows NT or Windows 2000. - Like any UNIX OS, Solaris 8.0 has a steep
learning curve.
13Solaris 8.0 versus Windows 2000
- Only Windows 2000 has these features
- Roaming User profiles
- Enterprise class Tape Backup system
- Supports more Hardware devices
- Only Solaris 8.0 has these features
- Remote system booting
- Automatic system Recovery when a device fails.
- Dynamic reconfiguration while the System is up.
- Runs on SPARC / ultraSPARC machine.
- Supports both 32-bit and 64-bit computing.
Which one has the best value (price/performance)?

14Solaris 8.0 in the UNIX arena
- Last January, the 2001 UNIX Function Review
compared todays most powerful UNIX OS - Solaris 8.0
- HP UNIX IIi
- IBM AIX 4.3.3.
- Tru64 UNIX 5-1
- UNIX WARE 7.1.1.
- The comparison criteria were as follows
- Scalability
- Reliability, Availability, Serviceability (RAS)
- System Management
- Internet web service
- Directory and Security Services
15Results of the Review...
- Solaris 8.0 lead in both RAS and
Directory/Security Service and came very strong
in Internet web service. - HP UNIX and Tru64 UNIX shared the lead in
system management. - Tru64 UNIX also led in Scalability.
- IBM AIX lead in Internet web service.
- HP UNIX finished at least 2nd in all categories.
16Solaris 8.0 came up first ...
- 2. HP UNIX IIi and Tru64 UNIX 5-1
- 4. AIX 4-3.3.
- 5. UnixWare 7.1.1.
17Power of UNIX scripts
- nice -19 find /tmp -user johns -mtime 30 -print
grep TRN xargs -i -t rm - nohup find / -name "" -print cpio -ocBv -O
/dev/st5 2gt/tmp/backup.err 1gt/tmp/backup.out - cat text_file tr 'A-Z' 'a-z' pr -d -l 50
-n -h "This is only a
test" copylaser
18Conclusion
- Being from the UNIX family, Solaris 8.0 is very
powerful, reliable, scalable and arguably the
most secure out there. - Very much connected to the World Wide Web.
- Once again, Sun Microsystems is coming up with
these new innovations - Dynamic Reconfiguration to replace just about any
devices (including CPUs, Memory, ) while the
Solaris 8.0 is running and there is no need to
reboot. - Automatic System recovery that allows Solaris
8.0 to auto-configure itself. - No doubt, Suns Solaris will be in command for
long.
