Title: The Bullet Effect

1
The Bullet Effect
  • The Human Disaster
  • Our Modern City The Technology Trap

2
How It All Started(Urbanization)
  • 4000 to 2200 BC
  • Invention of the Plow
  • It was modern, simple, efficient, readily
    available and cheap
  • Anyone can learn how to use it
  • One size fits all
  • Can be used to mass produce any produce

3
Memphis, Egypt
  • MEM fis (haven of good) an ancient royal city
during the Old Kingdom period of Egypts history
(about 3000 2200 B.C.) Situated on the west
bank of the NILE RIVER about 21 km (13 miles)
    south of Cairo.
  • The importance of Memphis is demonstrated by the
multitude of pyramids and the celebrated Sphinx
that are located near the site of the ancient
    city.
  • (Nelsons Illustrated Bible Dictionary)
  • It is believed by Tertius Chandler that Memphis
was the largest city in the world from its
foundation until around 2250 BC and from 1557 to
1400 BC. Its population was over 30,000. 1
  • (People congregating in this fertile valley
required more and more food production during
planting seasons. Hence, the invention and
modernization of the plow, originally pulled or
pushed by men, then by oxen)

4
Pyramids(Ancient Technological Marvels)
  • Sacred burial grounds of the Pharaoh (for the
worship of the Egyptian Sun God, Ra)
  • Mysterious (no one knows exactly how they were
    built)
  • Symmetrical (technological and mathematical
    marvel)
  • Oldest Pyramid Step Pyramid of King Djoser
    (about 2600 B.C.)
  • Largest Pyramid Great Pyramid of Khufu, or
Cheops, is one of the seven wonders of the
ancient world, covering 13 acres and originally
768 feet square and 482 feet high. Some stone
blocks of the Great Pyramid are estimated to
weigh more than 54,400 kilograms (60 tons).

Finally
8
Flooding of the Nile
Flooded Valley
Normal Dry Season
  • Taming a Natural Disaster
  • Floods becoming Irrigation means by channeling
flood waters through canals and aqueducts

9
Farmers, Technicians and Laborers
  • More food production required a wider variety of
    skilled workers
  • Farmers to produce more farms
  • Smiths (technicians) to produce more tools/plows
  • Laborers to work the farms
  • Merchants to sell the produce
  • Builders to house workers, tools, animals and
    equipment

10
Growth
  • Economic Growth
  • More farms (increased food production)
  • More trading (other goods traded for food)
  • Population Growth
  • More food brought in more people (both traders
and workers and just about anyone who was hungry)

11
More Growth
  • Trade Goods led to Invention of
  • Monetary Economy (weights and measures)
  • Market Places (organizing the selling of produce
    and other goods super markets)
  • Population Growth led to Invention of
  • Apartment HousingSky-Rises (less land was used
for housing as more land was used for farming.
Hence, building upwards, usually by the
    farmers/landowners who became diverse business
    leaders)

12
Technological Growth
  • Housing Projects (led to)
  • Developers and Planners
  • Designers
  • Carpenters
  • Masons
  • Markets (developed)
  • Traders / Auctioneers
  • Economists / Accountants
  • Seers (recorded seasons/moons and the weather
    invention of the Calendar)
  • Transportation (invention of the cart drawn by
cows or horses stemming from cows pulling the
plow add wheels to a box and pull the produce
    to market)

13
Early Developments
14
Forecasting and Predictions
  • Seers/Clergy (invention of)
  • Calendars (counting and recording how many moons
between the flooding of the Nile river. The
floods covered a vast area used as farmland
planting began before flooding, now that they can
predict it floods watered the seeds, receded and
    farms boomed)
  • Canals and Dykes (control flooding and flow of
    water mathematics and science)

15
Memphis Metropolitan (about 2100 B.C.)
  • Population 2 million people (according to Dr.
    James Burke)
  • Occupations and Trades
  • Farming, housing, transportation, metallurgy,
marketing, candle and lamp making, record keeping
and accounting, clothing, potters, health care
    providers, education, planning and development,
    etc.
  • Ultimately, leaders developed into skilled rulers
and city officials to govern and maintain order
hence the progress into Egyptian governmental
    system.

16
Advent of Steam Power and Discovery of Oil
  • Steam and Oil technologies created a production
    boom in
  • Farming (mechanized plows and harvesters)
  • Transportation (motorized)
  • Electricity
  • Lifts / Elevators (for Skyscrapers)
  • Lights
  • Automation (mass production of everything)

17
The Bullet Effect (Dr. James
Burke)
  • The speed with which the Plow developed our
human environment into the modern city that we
have today, now dependent upon technology, and
technology dependant upon electric energy, which
is dependant on fuels, which keep our cities
functioning. All of which depend on food
production (THE PLOW) in order to keep the city
    alive.

18
The Trap
  • Electricity / Fuel
  • Remove the fuel (that creates electricity) and
  • Transportation shuts down youre trapped
  • Lift / Elevator stops (on the 35th Floor?)
    youre trapped
  • Businesses (dependant on computers) cant
    function youre trapped with
  • No lights
  • No mail deliveries
  • No e-mails
  • No telephone communications
  • No television or radio services
  • No school
  • No church
  • No stores, etc., etc.
  • Whatever will you do?

19
The (Human) Disaster
  • Run (get out of the city), BUT
  • Millions of other humans are trying to get out
  • Roads are crowded, some jammed with the human
    outflow
  • Rioting and violence is escalating
  • Police and Military cant function
    (no fuel / no electricity)
  • You are trapped in a disaster of your own making
  • Youre all alonejust trying to survive

20
Survival?

Can you plow?
