Title: Poetry Elements

1
Poetry Elements
  • Alliteration The repetition of consonant sounds
at the beginnings of syllables. Tongue twisters
are an exaggerated use of alliteration. She
    sells seashells by the seashore.

2
Poetry Elements
  • Assonance The repetition of a vowel sound in
stressed syllables that end in different
consonant sounds, as with the long i sounds in
    lime light.

3
Poetry Elements
  • Personification Personification is a figure of
speech in which something not human is described
as if it were human. In the poem Deserted Barn
    the barn had feelings.

4
Poetry Elements
  • Onomatopoeia Onomatopoeia is the use of words
or phrases like meow or beep that sound like
    what they name.

5
Poetry Elements
  • End Rhyme The repetition of sounds at the ends
of words that appear at the ends of lines.

6
Poetry Elements
  • Internal Rhyme Rhymes that are within the line
of a poem as in the title of the poem Hector the
    Collector.

7
Poetry Elements
  • Repetition Repetition is more than one use of a
sound, word, or group of words. Repetition is a
tool that works to create or enhance rhythm. It
also gives the sense that the speaker is
dwelling on the repeated idea. In the poem
Forgotten Language the repetition of the Once
I (verb) format is at the beginning of many
    lines.

8
Poetry Elements
  • Imagery An image is a vivid mental picture
created in a readers mind by the language. The
images in a literary work are referred to, when
considered all together, as the works imagery.

9
Poetry Elements
  • Metaphors A metaphor is a figure of speech in
which one thing is spoken or written is if it
were another. The figure of speech compares two
things and often uses is or are to compare the
    two things.
  • Examples Love is a red rose.
  • A description can also make a comparison- That
song always leaps from inside me and gallops
around in circles, restless and eager.

10
Poetry Elements
  • Similes A comparison of two things using like
    or as.
  • Example The river flows like a stream of glass.
