Steering Straight Forward
  • Aim high with your visual search
  • Do not look at the center line or hood ornament
  • Avoid looking at your hands or feet
  • Make slight steering corrections
  • Over steering
  • Under steering

Steering strait backward
  • Hold the brake pedal down and shift to REVERSE
  • Turn your body to the right, and put your right
    arm over the back of the seat.
  • Left hand at the top of the steering wheel
  • Release pressure on the brake
  • Move the top of the steering wheel in the
    direction you want the back of the car to go.
  • Cover the brake while the car moves back, glance
    to the front and sides to check traffic.
  • Continue looking through back window

Changing Lanes
  • Check traffic ahead in both lanes and through
    both rearview mirrors
  • Signal and make a blind spot check over your left
    shoulder to see if any vehicle is about to pass
    you
  • Steer gently into the next lane if it is clear
  • Cancel your signal and adjust speed

Hand-over-hand Steering
  • Begin the turn from a balanced hand position.
  • Place your right hand near the top of the wheel
    and pull down to the left while releasing your
    left hand from the wheel.
  • Pull down about a quarter turn with your right
    hand while crossing your left hand over your
    right.
  • Pull down with our left hand again as you release
    your right hand. Continue until you have steered
    enough to complete the turn.

Procedure for Turning
  • Position your car in the correct lane
  • Brake gently
  • Visual search pattern
  • Slow
  • Turn right when your front wheels are even with
    the corner
  • Turn left just before the center of the
    intersection
  • Turn into the nearest lane of traffic

Backing Left and Right
  • Check for traffic and pedestrians
  • Turn you head towards the direction you will back
  • Pull the wheel to the left to back left
  • Pull the wheel to the right to back right
  • Back slowly as you enter the turn

Turnabout
  • Do not make a turnabout near hills or curves or
    within 200 feet of intersections
  • Never in heavy traffic
  • Check local laws
  • Have at least 1 ½ football fields of clear
    visibility in each direction
  • Be sure you have enough space to complete the
    maneuver

Back Into Driveway on Right Side
  • Check traffic to the rear and signal a stop
  • Stop next to curb and check traffic again then
    back slowly to the right to position 3
  • Signal a left turn
  • Drive forward to position 4

Midblock U Turn
  • Check traffic ahead to the rear and signal right
  • Signal a left turn
  • Check traffic and turn sharply left
  • Check traffic to the rear, straighten the wheels
    and accelerate gently into the proper lane

Pull Into Driveway on Left
  • Check traffic ahead and to the rear. Signal a
    left turn
  • Back slowly to the right to position 3
  • Accelerate gently an drive forward to position 4

Pull Into Driveway on Right Side
  • Check traffic ahead and to the rear. Signal a
    right turn
  • Check traffic again, back slowly across the
    street turning left toward position 3
  • Drive forward to position 4

  • Check traffic to the rear
  • Signal right and stop close to position 2
  • Signal a left turn
  • Turn sharply left to 3
  • Back to position 4
  • Move to position 5

Angle Parking
  • Position your car about five feet out from the
    row of parked cars
  • Signal right turn
  • Flash break lights
  • When you can see down the right lane of the
    parking stall, turn sharply to the right
  • Straighten the wheels when you are centered

Perpendicular Parking
  • Position car as far to the left of your lane as
    possible.
  • Signal a right turn.
  • Flash your brake lights.
  • Check traffic.
  • When the front bumper of your car passes the left
    rear taillight of the car to the right of the
    space, turn the wheels sharply right.
  • Straighten wheels when you are centered.

Leaving an Angle or Perpendicular Parking Space
  • Creep straight back while you cover the brake
  • When your front bumper is even with the left
    cars rear bumper begin to turn right
  • Back into the nearest lane and stop with the
    wheels straight. Shift to a forward gear and
    proceed

Parallel Parking
  • Flash brake lights and signal a right turn.
  • Stop when your rear bumper is even with font car.
  • Check traffic.
  • Back slowly as you turn right.
  • When the back of your seat is even with the rear
    bumper of the front car , straighten the wheels.
  • When your front bumper is a t the cars back
    bumper, turn sharply left.
  • When you car is parallel to the curb, straighten
    wheels.
  • Center your car in the space.

  • Back straight until your rear bumper almost
    touches the car behind
  • Turn wheels sharply left just before you stop
  • Signal a left turn
  • Check traffic
  • Check right front fender for clearance
  • Turn wheels slowly to the right when halfway out
    of the parking space
  • Center your car in the lane

Uphill Parking With a curb
  • Position car close to curb
  • Turn you steering wheel sharply left
  • Shift to neutral, let the front right tire touch
    the curb
  • Shift to park

  • Pull as far off the payment as possible
  • Turn steering wheel sharply right
  • Shift to park

Downhill Parking With a Curb
  • Position your car close to the curb and stop.
  • Let the car creep forward slowly while you turn
    the steering wheel sharply right.
  • Let the right front tire touch the curb.
  • Shift to park.
