Mission Statement

• First Grade is dedicated to teaching children to
  strive for excellence in all areas and to love

• Masters in Education from University of North
  Texas with a Minor in Reading
• Twenty years at Rosemeade Elementary
• Reared in New Jersey
• Enjoys being a roadrunner!

In Reading First Graders Will...

• Participate in shared reading.
• Read independently for pleasure.
• Be exposed to a variety of rich childrens
  literature.
• Create books based on readings in class.

In Math We Will...

• Add and Subtract numbers 0- 18
• Focus on ones and tens
• Practice Estimation
• Work on Shapes and Figures
• Emphasize Patterning

Spelling...

• Words are grouped by word families and rhyming
  words.
• Tests are given on Fridays.
• The tests need to be signed by a parent on
  Mondays following the test.
• Students are responsible for returning the signed
  tests on Tuesdays.

Daily Schedule

• Please see the daily schedule provided in the
  packet.
• There are three scheduled bathroom breaks but
  children may obtain permission any time
  throughout the day.

Specials...

• Order is Art, Music, PE
• Children must wear appropriate attire on P.E.
  days.
• If school is not in session, the special day is
  skipped, and the rotation continues.
• Planning time is 945a.m. until 1040a.m., please

Homework...

• Homework sheets will be sent home every Monday.
• Parent/guardian initial every night.
• Please read with children every night for 10-15
  minutes.

Grades...

• Report Cards will be given every nine weeks.
• Conduct and academic grades assigned.
• Report cards will have numbers 1, 2, 3, 4
  assigned for specials.

Reading Program

• Complete reading logs..
• Parents initial sheets and students return.
• Each childs name is put on wall with
  corresponding person for that set of hundred.
• The number in the upper right corner is the
  number of books the student has already read
  prior to receiving the new reading log.

Rewards in the Classroom

• Praise/ privileges
• Daily rewards
• Compliment parties

Birthdays

• Treats are fine, but please no party invitations
  brought to school.
• Treats can be handed out at 200 p.m.
• Brownies or cookies are great choices.

Book Clubs

• Scholastic Book Orders every month.
• Please no cash, checks only.
• Orders are due Friday after they are sent home.
• Approximately one to two weeks to receive order.
• You may order online.

Bedtime

• The average bedtime for first graders that leads
  to optimal functioning at school is 800 or 830
  p.m.
