Week 9 Agenda
  • Unfinished business
  • Web site hosting
  • Setting up a domain name
  • Using a WYSIWYG editor...

3
Web Site Hosting
  • Options
  • Internet Service Providers
  • Often will give you a certain amount of disk
space to play with on the web (often 5-10MB)
  • Address would be http//www.isp.com/userid/
  • Free Web Pages
  • We've been using geocities.com
  • Others also exist xoom.com, tripod.lycos.com

4
Setting up a domain
  • Right now, your geocities.com address looks
    something likehttp//www.geocities.com/markbrano
    m/
  • If you'd rather have it look something like
    http//www.mycompany.com, you will need to
register your own domain name with Network
    Solutions.
  • http//www.networksolutions.com
  • Approx. 70 for 2 years (just domain name
registration) or 95 for 2 years (registration
plus pointing your domain name to an existing
website). Check with Network Solutions for
    up-to-date pricing.

WYSIWYG Editors
  • WYSIWYG stands for "What You See Is What You
Get". Be very careful about using WYSIWYG
editors to create webpages often what the
program creates is not exactly what you want
  • That said, I use them on a daily basis. Here are
    two of the bestDreamweaver (http//www.dreamwea
    ver.com)and Adobe GoLive (http//www.adobe.com/p
    roducts/golive/)
  • (DEMO -- Dreamweaver and GoLive)

Learning More...
  • Many local colleges and universities offer a
variety of classes on Web topics. Here are some
    suggestions

Learning More (cont.)
  • Books and Websites -- check the resources page
although they can be great resources, books are
often "outdated" before they're even published.
  • Practice! Most web designers learned how to "do"
HTML by looking at the source codes of others and
    playing around with tags
