California Gold Rush

• People came to California from all over the
  nation in 1849
• Known as Forty-Niners
• By 1849 California eligible for statehood
• Very few people found wealth

Immigration

• Individuals came from China, Europe and Latin
  America
• By 1850 laws had been passed against Chinese
  workers
• Foreign Miners Tax required a monthly licesning
  fee for foreign miners
• Physical attacks also became common place
• The arrival of blacks (freed and slave) led to
  resentment

Free-Soil Movement

• Wilmot Proviso
• A Bill which would have outlawed slavery in any
  lands acquired from Mexico during Mexican
  American War.
• Every Northerner but two voted for the bill
• Every Southerner but two voted against it
• Free-Soilers
• Sought to stop spread of slaver to protect white
  workers from unpaid labor

Compromise

• California applies for admission as a free-state
• This will upset the balance and angered
  Southerners
• John Calhoun argues against this
• As debate rages Henry Clay attempts yet another
  compromise

Compromise of 1850

• Final compromise has four main parts
• California enters as a free state
• Territories obtained from Mexico would decide by
  popular sovereignty
• Slave trade banned in D.C.
• Stricter version of the Fugitive Slave Law Passed
