It is a cool but pleasant morning in 1851.
Colonel Fairling is sitting on the front porch of
his plantation house in the heart of Alabama.
The Colonel is respected and well-known in this
area. He has a large plantation with over 50
slaves working his vast cotton fields. As he
reads a story in the paper about the recently
passed Fugitive Slave Act, he hears a wagon and
horses coming up the road.
It is his overseer. He has just caught a slave
named Joe who tried to run two nights earlier.
The overseer brings the shackled slave up to the
Colonel and shoves him on the ground. Colonel
Fairling shakes his head. Ive got to make an
example of ya, boy. Joe is lead into the
blacksmiths shop where he is tied down to a
table. Using a large hammer, the overseer breaks
both of Joes ankles. He will not be running
again.

  • The burlap sacks are hot and heavy on their
backs as they hide beneath them. They hear the
creek as the wagon groans forward. They wait
quietly and in an uncomfortable secrecy until
they feel the wagon stop. They peer out from
under the burlap. The wagon driver signals that
this is as far as he can take them. They
gratefully accept the food he has offered , but
are disappointed that they will not receive the
gun and compass Dr. Ross had promised them.
Their thoughts drift back to him and they wonder
    if he is alright.
  • That night, the companions find themselves in
the midst of a downpour. They wander through the
forest, they are cold, feet sloshing through mud
with each deliberate step they come to the edge
of the wood. Beyond the last braches they see a
house. In the window they spy a lone candle. It
burns with their last ray of hope.
