Welcome to Ukraine
  • Ukraine is situated in the south-eastern part of
Central Europe and has its own territory,
government, national emblem, flag and anthem. It
    borders on Russia, Byelorussia, Moldova,
Slovakia, Roumania, Hungary and Poland on land
and Russia, Georgia, Bulgaria, Roumania and
    Turkey on sea

Background
  • Ukraine was the center of the first Slavic state,
Kievan Rus, which during the 10th and 11th
centuries was the largest and most powerful state
in Europe. Weakened by internecine quarrels and
Mongol invasions, Kievan Rus was incorporated
into the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and eventually
    into the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

5
language
  • In Ukraine official language is Ukrainian, but
people speak two languages Ukrainian and
Russian. Most of the people do not know English,
so before coming to Ukraine it is a good idea to
learn some basic phrases that could help you to
communicate in the shops or other places.

6
Government
  • Ukraine continues to make steady progress toward
developing a democratic state based on the rule
of law. Under Ukraine's first post-Soviet
Constitution, adopted on June 28, 1996, power was
formally divided between three branches of
    government -- the executive, national
    legislature, and the judiciary.

7
Politics
  • Ukraine is a republic. The final version of its
constitution was adopted in 1996. Executive power
is in the hands of the president and prime
minister, with legislative power vested in the
450 member Verkhovna Rada (Supreme Council). On a
regional level, the country is divided into 24
administrative divisions called oblasts and one
autonomous republic (Crimea). Each oblast is
    divided into administrative countries (rayons).
Oblasts and rayons are named after the principal
    town within their boundary.
