Wind-Aid
Problem Statement
  • Convert wind energy to storable electric energy
  • Easily deployable (compact, portable, robust)
  • Operate in wind speed of nominally 15 mph (wind
speed varies over a 24 hr. period from 0-30 mph
    so need a storage capability)
  • Power an emergency communication system with 20W
    at 12V continuous DC
  • Able to be carried on a persons back or dropped
from a helicopter at 20ft without a parachute

Current Status On Schedule
  • Key Design Requirements
  • Transporter
  • Lightweight (lt40lbs)
  • Compact (12x18x36)
  • Operator
  • Easy to use (no training necessary)
  • Easy to set up (by one person in lt1hr)
  • Operates a communications device (20W at 12V)
  • Can operate under varying wind conditions (store
18 hrs of energy and operate in 7-30 mph wind)
  • Easy to assemble (done by 1 person)
  • Relief Organization
  • Cost (lt2000)
  • Durable (lasts gt1 mo.)
  • Potential Design Solutions
  • Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT)
  • Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT)
  • WindBelt
