Book Of Revelation
  • Chapter 13
  • The Two Beasts

A Change in Chapter 12
  • Some who agree with the view presented so far
would say that Chapters 12-19 are a simple rerun
of the events in chapters 6-11. However, this
    approach does not hold up.
  • Instead, I believe these chapters are intended to
picture the fulfillment of Daniel 244, 713-14,
    21-27 927.

4
Applications
  • Boldness in Christ is to be cherished above life
    (1211)
  • Mark 838 Whoever is ashamed of Me and of My
words in this adulterous and sinful generation,
of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when
He comes in the glory of His Fathers with the
    holy angels.

5
Applications
  • Those who overcome are true believers not
    bystanders
  • (Hugh Hewitt, The Embarrassed Believer)
  • Believers attend church services on a very
    regular basis. Bystanders attend either
occasionally, infrequently, or not at all.
  • Believers teach their children and others
children the essentials of the faith. Bystanders
    entrust that chore to others.

6
Applications
  • Believers talk to others about Christ, even if
they find it unpleasant. Bystanders are
theoretically willing to do so if approached but
    have hardly ever been approached.
  • Believers read Scripture though it takes work and
effort. Bystanders intend to get around to it.
  • No job is beneath a believer. Bystanders dont
want many jobs, but can sacrifice themselves for
leadership positions if coaxed and pleaded with.

7
Applications
  • Believers honor the men who lead the
    congregation. Bystanders, when they notice
church leaders at all, are consistent only in
    their willingness to critique.
  • Believers seek more and more teaching about God.
Bystanders have what they need and would rather
not be bothered with long lessons. They spend
less time in the house of prayer to busy
themselves with the cares and advancements of the
    world.

Salvation-obtainers or Self-esteem builders?
  • The assembly is no longer a place of worship, but
a holy gymnasium family counseling center.
  • The modern church has turned from scripture to
    need gratification.
  • Instead of saving souls, the modern church tries
to compete in secular gratification with a world
that is a master of the art.
  • Elders, no longer spiritual leaders, but board
    members, directors, and corporate managers.
  • Preachers, no longer heralds of the gospel, but
    professional staff managers.

From Mark Dunagans Sermon on Revelation 12

Salvation-obtainers or Self-esteem builders?
American churches seemed more concerned to save
marriages than souls, more interested in
self-esteem than salvation, and more concerned to
relieve depression and anxiety than to deal with
the fundamental reality of sin (Hugh Hewitt,
The Embarrassed Believer, pp. 30-31).
From Mark Dunagans Sermon on Revelation 12
10
The Sea Beast (131-10)
  • Beasts description similar to that of Satan (cf.
    123)
  • difference Satan has 7 crowns on head beast
    has crowns on horns
  • reason for similarities - beast is Satans agent
    for evil

11
The Sea Beast (131-10)
  • The sea, horns, and blasphemy are links to the
    Roman Empire
  • beast out of sea in Rev. 131 parallel to 4
beasts from sea in Dan. 72-3
  • ten horns of Rev. 131 parallel to ten horns of
    Dan. 77
  • blasphemous words of Rev. 135-7 parallel to
pompous words against the Most High of Dan.
    78,11,20,25

12
The Land Beast (1311-18)
  • two horns like a lamb seemingly religious
    appearance authority
  • spoke like a dragon an agent of Satan
  • exercises all the authority of first beast
    backed by political power
  • causes the earth and those who dwell in it to
worship the first beast represents and promotes
    pagan Caesar worship

13
Deceiving Signs (1313-14)
  • Able to perform signs to further deceit
  • Lying wonders (2 Thess. 29-12)
  • Gods signs done by 1st century Christians were
more persuasive (i.e., Philip and Simon in Acts
    8)
  • However, for people who do not love the truth,
the signs of Satan will be ample evidence to
    remain lost.

14
Some Things Have Not Changed
  • False religions use false signs today to deceive
    people too.
  • tongue speaking faith healing
  • demonic exorcisms
  • supposed sightings of Mary
  • bread and wine turning to lit. body and blood of
    Jesus
  • Many deceived ones will not open the Bible to
investigate. . .want a sensational religion.

15
The Lords Admonition
  • Mark 1322, 23 For false christs and false
prophets will rise and show signs and wonders to
deceive, if possible, even the elect. But take
heed see, I have told you all things beforehand.

16
666
  • Numbers in Revelation are to be understood
    symbolically.
  • The proper understanding of 666 is based on
    properly understanding 7
  • 7 represents divine completeness
  • 6 represents the number of a man
  • short of seven incomplete
  • failure (6) upon failure (6) upon failure
    (6)
