E-Waste
  • The City of Onkaparinga carried out the first
Council provided e-waste collection in South
    Australia in June 2006.
  • The collection was an outstanding success and
    community feedback was extremely positive.

4
Background
  • Why did we provide the service?
  • steady number of resident queries
  • noticeable increase of e-waste items in illegal
dumping material also e-waste appearing in hard
    waste collections and MGBs
  • To provide responsible leadership and continue
with Councils policies on reducing environmental
    harm.

5
When
  • June 2006 was chosen in support of World
    Environment Day.

6
Operations
  • based on interstate experience we decided on a
skip system where residents would bring along
their e-waste and deposit it into the skips
  • e-cycle recoveries were engaged to provide the
skips and to remove the material for recycling
  • objective to divert and recycle a projected
10-12 tonne of electronic waste from landfill.

Cost - 44,500
  • when you consider the high level of promotion,
the population of the City of Onkaparinga is
around 155,000 people and being the first
collection we believe that we cleared up a lot of
backlog and would expect much less next time
    around 97 of material recycled
  • the environmental savings in the prevention of
improper disposal far out weigh monetary costs
  • e-cycle recovery provided much valued support in
the overall exercise including the promotion,
collection / processing and project completion
    reports.

15
Lessons
  • high Level of promotion of a free service
  • high take up rate
  • staffing - another staff member to assist with
    breaks
  • skips - ensure ample room for loading
  • - have a back up skip on standby.

16
Future
  • The City of Onkaparinga is examining some options
to co-ordinate another e-waste collection this
financial year. One of these involves a shared
cost basis where users pay a portion of the cost.
