7
Crafting A Successful Grant Making Program From
10,000 to 1 Million or more!
8
Charity/Giving vs. Philanthropy/Grant Making
  • Both are important and critical to non-profits
  • -but they are clearly different.
  • Charitable giving buying a table at charity
    events, sponsoring foursomes at golf-tournaments,
    underwriting fundraising events, etc.
  • Philanthropy a focused approach with a set
amount of dollars to pro-actively seek to make a
    change.
  • Example Company has 50,000 in charitable
dollars sponsoring 20 to 30 very worthwhile
causes- take 25,000 of that and target those
dollars on a particular community issue.

9
Develop your Mission and Focus Area(s)
  • What issues are important to your organization?
  • Who do you want to help?
  • What concrete results do are you looking for?
  • What is important in the community? What experts
and advocates can help you? (This will help
    set-up possible strategic partnerships and
    increase funding potential.)
  • Are there unique ways in which your
team/foundation/athlete can make a difference in
    a particular area?

10
Mission Statement
  • Believing that youth represent the communitys
future, the Jacksonville Jaguars Foundation is
committed to serving the greater Jacksonville
area through strategic financial, networking and
    volunteer support benefiting economically and
socially disadvantaged youth and families. By
building upon our citys strengths, we seek to
realize the positive potential of our young
people in need. In doing so, we aim to serve as
a model to other sports franchises.

Evaluation
  • Always ask applicants for their evaluation plan
  • It is worth paying an agency more money if they
have a good evaluation plan in place. Funders
want to know the results, and HOW the results are
being tracked, measured, and reviewed by the
    agency
  • In the long-run, programs with good evaluations
    are much better investments
