Standards and Conventions

• Graphic communication must follow a set of
  standards and conventions in order to make
  communication effective.
• What would happen if there were no standards in
  graphics communications.
• These standards and conventions are not set in
  stone and are changed with time.
• What types of things could cause our conventions
  to change?

• Conventions are commonly accepted practices, rule
  or methods.

• They are used to convey the same meaning to
  everyone.

Alphabet of Lines

• The alphabet of lines is a set of ASME Standards
  (ANSI/ASME 14.2 M-1992) used on technical
  drawings.

Title Blocks

• Title Blocks are used to record all of the
  important information necessary for the working
  drawings.
• A continuation title block is used for
  multiple-sheet drawings and does not contain as
  much detail as the title block found on the first
  sheet.

Title blocks could contain the following

• Name and address of the company or design
  activity
• Title of the Drawing
• Drawing Number
• Names and dates of the drafters, checker, issue
  date, contract number, etc.
• Design approval when subcontractors are used
• Additional approval block
• Predominant drawing scale
• Federal supply code for manufacturers
• Drawing sheet size letter designation.
• Actual or estimated weight of the item
• Sheet number if there are multiple sheets

LETTERING

• For engineering drawings we use san serif GOTHIC
  lettering.
• Lettering is to used provide easy to read and
  understand information to supplement the drawing
  and indicate dimensions for the manufacture or
  fabrication of the part shown in the drawing.

Conventions for Lettering

• Use all capital letters
• Text and Numbers should be the 1/8 tall for
  notes and dimensions
• Use even pressure to draw precise, clean lines
• Use one stroke per line
• Horizontal Strokes are drawn left to right
• Vertical Strokes are drawn downward
• Curved strokes are drawn top to bottom in one
  continuous stroke on each side.
• Spacing between letters is based on width, with
  the letter, W being the widest and the letter,
  I being the narrowest.
• Spacing between words should be the width of on
  letter with space on each side.
• Use kerning to eliminate excessive space between
  letters
• Notes should be double spaced.
