Scott Field History
  • Founded Jun 14, 1917 on 624 acres of land
  • Named after Corporal Frank Scott, the first
    enlisted man killed in a military airplane crash
  • Flying operations started on Sep 11, 1917
    training pilots and ground crews for World War I
  • In 1920, Air Service Balloon and Airship School
    established

Scott Field History
  • Radio School relocated to Scott Field in 1940 to
    train radio operators for World War II bomber,
    fighter and transport aircraft
  • In 1957, base transferred to the Military Air
    Transport Service, the forerunner of todays Air
    Mobility Command
  • Scott AFB is home today to US Transportation
    Command, Air Mobility Command, 18th Air Force,
    Air Force Communications Agency and 3 Flying
    Wings

  • Commemorates the outstanding relationship between
    Scott AFB and the communities of Southern
    Illinois
  • Showcases mobility aircraft that have been
    assigned to Scott AFB or the Air Mobility Command
  • Completely funded with public and private
    donations and grants

Scott Field Heritage Air Park Committee
  • A group of local citizens who are responsible for
    raising funds and constructing the air park
  • Incorporated as an Illinois not-for-profit
    corporation
  • Exempt organization under Internal Revenue Code
    Section 501(c)(3)
  • Honorary Board Members include four previous
    commanders of Air Mobility Command, Senator
    Dixon, Congressman Costello, former USTRANSCOM
    Director of Operations

Future Site of Air Park
  • Located north of the Scott AFB Shiloh Gate
  • Completely accessible without entering Scott AFB
  • Parking is conveniently located off base adjacent
    to the air park

You dont have to be in the military to visit the
air park!

Air Park Design

C-9 Nightingale
  • Designed for aeromedical evacuation mission
  • The first C-9A was rolled out on 17 June 1968 and
    delivered to Scott AFB
  • Carried up to 40 litters and 40 ambulatory
    patients, two nurses and three aeromedical
    attendants
  • Retired from active duty in 2004
  • Flown by the 375th Airlift Wing
  • Currently flown by 932nd Airlift Wing

KC-135 Stratotanker
  • First jet air refueling aircraft
  • First flight August 1956
  • Last aircraft delivered to USAF in 1965
  • 732 aircraft produced
  • More than 490 aircraft currently flown by Active
    Duty, Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve
    crews
  • Flown by 126th Air Refueling Wing at Scott AFB

C-140 Jetstar
  • Originally built to meet US Air Force
    requirements for a utility transport
  • The US Air Force bought a total of 16 JetStars,
    first delivered in late 1961
  • Five C-140As were assigned to the Air Force
    Communications Command
  • Used in evaluating military navigation aids and
    operations at US bases around the world
  • Flown by 1866 Facility Checking Squadron at Scott
    AFB

C-141 Starlifter
  • The first C-141A, delivered to Tinker AFB, Okla.,
    in October 1964
  • The C-141 was the first jet transport to drop
    U.S. Army paratroopers and the first to land in
    the Antarctic
  • The first C-141B was received by the Air Force in
    December 1979
  • The last active-duty C-141B retired Sept.
    16, 2004, at McGuire AFB, N.J.

More than 40 years of service and nearly nine
million flying hours

C-130 Hercules
  • Prime transport for air dropping troops and
    equipment into hostile areas
  • Operated by the Air Mobility Command, Air Force
    Special Operations Command, Air Combat Command,
    U.S. Air Forces in Europe, Pacific Air Forces,
    Air National Guard and the Air Force Reserve
    Command
  • First deliveries of the C-130A started in Dec
    1956
  • C-130E introduced in 1962 with the C-130H
    arriving in 1974
  • C-130J entered the inventory
  • in 1999
  • Over 1,000 USAF C-130s
  • produced
