The History Behind the Fur Trade

• During the French Regime, the fur trade was the
  major activity that sustained a colony.
• Merchants sold imported goods.
• Types of furs they sold or traded

History of the Voyageur

• Voyageur is the French word meaning traveler.
• Over 300 years ago they were in search of
  valuable fur-bearing animals.
• Voyageurs were the backbone of the fur trade
  empire.

The Corporation

• Founded in 1969.
• It is a non-profit organization.
• Led by a 14 member board of directors.
• Operates a budget of 3.8 million.
• Unites over 2000 volunteers and 80 community
  organizations.

What Is It?

• Largest winter festival in Western Canada
• Ten Day celebration reflecting Canadas French -
  Canadian heritage
• Held in St. Boniface, Winnipeg Manitoba
• About a quarter of a million visitors come and
  join the festivities each year

• The Governors Ball
• This gala event offers the mystique and romance
  of the 19th century ball.
• People are eligible to win great prizes if they
  wore a costume from the fur trade era.

Sled Dog Races

• Sled Dog Races
• Mushers from across North America meet annually
  for the Iams voyageur international sled dog
  races.

Fort Gibraltar

• Replica of the houses and cabins of blacksmiths
  and trappers of the 1800s.
• Theme provided witness to the fur trade and
  settlement of the voyageur- Metis and Bourgeois.
• Reflects the key elements of life in the Red
  River Valley in the 1800s.

Tents Trading Posts

• Tents hold concerts, fiddling and jigging
  concerts.
• Pambian Trading Posts is the largest trading post
  in the festival.
• Souvenirs are sold at tents, same with
  French-Canadian dishes.

Snow Sculpting

• Symposium
• Brings sculptures from around the world to design
  a sculpture w/ snow.
• Voyageur Snow Sculpting Competition
• individuals, or groups compete w/ each other.
