Points to be highlighted today
  • Temperature fixed sites over multiple years
    still primary eMOLT objective

6
Points to be highlighted today
  • Temperature fixed sites over multiple years
    still primary eMOLT objective
  • Salinity now limited to investigating submarine
    freshwater discharge hypothesis

7
Points to be highlighted today
  • Temperature fixed sites over multiple years
    still primary eMOLT objective
  • Salinity now limited to investigation of
    possible submarine freshwater discharge
  • Current drift will be measured with
near-surface drifters beginning June 2004 for
    purposes of validating numerical model
    simulations

8
eMOLT database stats
  • fixed sites documented 159
  • temperature records 1,015,591
  • salinity records 70,170
  • drifter sightings reported 55
  • drifter automated fixes 15,407
  • people returning data 104

Summary
  • Temperature
  • springs 2003 2004 5 degF colder than 2002
  • to be maintained for years to come
  • Salinity
  • redesigned to investigate submarine freshwater
    discharges in Casco Bay
  • Drift
  • summer 2003 demonstrates feasibility
  • summer 2004 monthly deployments planned

  • eMOLT drifter-reporting IVR phone prompts as
    currently proposed
  • "..... Press 5 to report a drifter sighting"
  • "Thank you for helping us in our study of
lobster larvae drift. There are 4 to 5 prompts
that follow, each expecting a keypad response.
Please have the drifters ID and its location
ready. If anything goes wrong or is confusing ,
don't worry, there are other options near the end
of the message. We appreciate your effort.
Let's get started. Please enter the 5-digit
drifter id number now(if the user does not
respond right away, the prompt will repeat itself
but one can enter the 5-digit code anytime during
    the message)
  • "Press 1 to enter location in loran coordinates
or press 2 to enter location in latitude and
    longitude"
  • 1
  • "enter the first five digits of
    the first loran coordinate"
  • "enter the first five digits of
    the second loran coordinate"
  • 2
  • "enter your latitude in
    degrees-minutes to the nearest minute"
  • "enter your longitude in
    degrees-minutes to the nearest minute"
  • Enter the day of the month the drifter was
    sighted followed by the sign."
  • "Thank you. If you wish to be contacted, enter
your ten digit phone number beginning with the
    area code. Otherwise, press "
  • "If you have any comments, press 1 to enter a
voice phone message. Otherwise, press ."
  • "Thank you for cooperation. If you have any
questions, call 207-985-8088. That number again
    is 207-985-8088. Good Bye."
  • Note The automated system is currently on-line
at a toll free number 1-888-284-4904. The more
people that try this NOW and provide suggestions,
the better it will be in the end. Some of the
proposed wording has not yet been implemented.

Stenciled text to go on drifter sails Sail 1
"If found adrift, take the following
steps 1) note drifter id lat/lon. 2)
call 1-888-284-4904 3) enter "5" at first
prompt, 4) follow instructions, and 5)
return drifter to water. If found either ashore
or SE of Stellwagen Bank, call
1-508-495-2211 and take drifter home." Sail
2 "By following instructions, you will be
helping us, the Gulf of Maine Lobster
Foundation, MLA, DELA, Southern Maine Community
College marine science students and NOAA in a
collaborative research study of lobster larvae
drift. Funded by the Northeast Consortium"
Sail 3 "This unit was deployed off on by
lobsterman " Sail

  • ID code convection
  • Each drifter has a 5-digit ID "ABCDE" painted
on the PVC, the flag, the flotation, and
    subsurface sails as follows
  • "A" is the year of deployment (3,4,5...)
  • "B" is the month of deployment (5,6,7,8, or 9)
  • "C" is the last digit of the deg latitude of
release for the offshore-most drifter in the
    transect (2,3, or 4)
  • "D" is the last digit of the degrees longitude of
releasing offshore-most drifter in the transect
    (0,9,8, or 7)
  • "E" is the offshore extent (inshoremost drifter
    is 1) where
  • Examples
  • drifter 46204 is a dark blue drifter deployed in
about 40 meters of water off Glouchester Mass
(42 deg north,70 deg west,) in June of 2004
  • drifter 65472 is the 2nd drifter from the coast
(20m), painted black, that was deployed off
Cutler Me (44 deg north, 67deg west) in May
    2006
