Step 1 Preparing for the Interview
  • Five Ws
  • What is the topic?
  • Where will the interview take place?
  • When is the interview?
  • Why are you being interviewed?
  • Who else will be interviewed?

Step 2 Before the Interview
  • Determine dress code and formality of the
    interview
  • Newspaper dress is informal
  • Radio dress is informal
  • Television dress professionally, no loud colors
    or designs, no stripes
  • Relax!

Step 3 During the Interview
  • Remember messages use them!
  • Dont respond to a negative question by repeating
    the question
  • Never say No comment
  • You are always on record

  • If you dont know the answer, say so
  • Correct reporter if appropriate
  • Dont be defensive youre in charge!

  • Thank reporter
  • Confirm quotes or answer additional questions
  • Give the reporter your contact information
  • Follow up

Interview Tips
  • Try to remain calm and collected
  • Be alert, try not to become frustrated
  • Look at the reporter, not the camera
  • When you finish, finish
  • Avoid negative words
  • Avoid jokes
  • Tell stories to make a point

  • If you dont know the answer, say so
  • Rehearse
  • Be sincere listen to the reporter
  • Dont repeat negative questions
  • Correct reporter if appropriate

Closing
  • Reporters are people, too! They arent
    necessarily out to get you, so talk to them like
    you would your neighbor, provide them the facts
    and keep it as simple and concise as possible.
