Folk dances from three regions of Mexico
(Yucatan, Veracruz, and Jalisco) are examined.
Emphasis is placed on the ways in which these
folk dances reflect the history and cultural
attitudes of the Mexican people and,
particularly, on the influence of Spanish culture
and history on Mexican folk dances. The area of
Spain which is most influenced the dance as it is
currently performed in Mexico, the musical score,
explanation of myths and traditions connected
with the dances, and on the history and general
culture of the area in which the dance is
performed.
 8History
- The land where southeastern Veracruz lies
today is a large and extremely fertile flood
plain, formed over time from sediments carried
from the high lands by plentiful rivers. These
conditions made it easy for groups of migrants to
settle and later to give origin to a very
 little-known Mesoamerican civilization called the
 Olmecs.
 During Mexico's independence, Veracruz
played a heroic role in resisting the invasions
from Spain in 1829, from the U.S. in 1847 and
1914.
 9Climate
On the coastal plains and throughout most
of the state, the climate is hot and humid. On
the foothills of the mountains, the climate is
cool and humid. The climate only becomes cold in
the mountain regions, where it also rains
copiously. Veracruz is occasionally affected by
hurricanes from June to October.
