But First an important point
  • Save your EndNote library to a remove-able disk.
  • Backing up your EndNote Library.
  • Click on File and then Save a Copy
  • Select the appropriate drive
  • Press Save
  • Note
  • To make a back up copy enter another file name
    such as library_copy.

Setting up EndNote
  • Once you have installed EndNote you may want to
    add do a few things to make it easier to use.
  • Add Import Filters for databases
  • Add Output Styles (e.g. APA, MLA, etc.)
  • Add the correct connection file for CardCat

Adding Import Filters
  • Import filters allow you to import citations from
    databases.
  • To add import filters click on
  • Edit
  • Import Filters
  • Open Filter Manager
  • Either scroll down the list or search it using
    Find
  • Select filters for the database you will be
    importing citations from

Adding Output Styles
  • Output styles are citation styles.
  • To add a citation style click on
  • Edit
  • Output Styles
  • Open Style Manager
  • Either scroll down the list or search it using
    Find
  • Select the citation style you would like to use

Adding a Connection File
  • Connection files allow you to search a database
    from within EndNote by connecting to the
    database.
  • At present you may only search CardCat from
    within EndNote.
  • To add a connection click on
  • Edit
  • Connection Files
  • Open Connection Manager

Importing a New Connection File
  • The connection file for CardCat in EndNote is
    incorrect. To correct this go to the following
    Web page.

Searching CardCat using EndNote
  • To search CardCat from within EndNote click on
  • Tools
  • Connect
  • Select ball_state_u from the connection list
  • Enter your search terms and press Search
  • Select records from the results list to add to
    your library

Creating New Libraries
  • Citations are stored in libraries.
  • When you open EndNote, it will prompt you to
    create a new library.
  • You may also create a library by clicking on
  • File
  • New
  • Enter a name for your library and press Save

Importing Citations
  • To import a list of citations create a list by
    marking and saving citations from a database
    results list.
  • Open the EndNote library you wish to add
    citations to by clicking on File gt Import
  • Choose the database that the citations came from
    using the drop down box next to Import Options

  • Select the file containing the citations by
    clicking on Choose File
  • Click on Import
  • If you have selected the correct filter the
    citations will appear in your library

Working with Citations
  • Searching a citation library.
  • Open a library
  • Click on References gt Search References
  • Enter your search terms and press Search
  • Removing duplicates from the list click on
  • References gt Find duplicates
  • References gt Delete References
  • Click Ok

Entering Your Own Citations
  • Not all of your sources will come from databases
    you will want to be able to enter citations on
    your own.
  • To enter a citation
  • Click on References gt New Reference
  • Select the format of your resource from the
    dropdown box
  • Enter the information in the space provided

Merging EndNote Libraries
  • There are two ways you may merge EndNote
    libraries.
  • Method 1
  • Open the library you want to import citations
    into
  • Click on File gt Import
  • Choose EndNote Library from the Import Option
    dropdown box
  • Next select the library you wish to import from
    by pressing Choose File

  • Method 2
  • Open both the library you want to import from and
    import to
  • Highlight the citation or citations you wish to
    import
  • Drag the citations to the library you wish to
    import to
  • Note
  • To highlight all of them press CntrlA.

MergingEven More
  • It is a good idea to make sure that you remove
    the duplicate any records resultant from the
    merge. This will prevent you from using
    identical citations to format different
    citations.
  • When you merge 2 libraries, it is best not to use
    the merged library with the paper you merged the
    library from. The record numbers from the
    citations will not mach up.

Exporting Citations
  • You may create a bibliography or works cited page
    by exporting the citations in your library.
  • To export citations
  • Click on References gt Show All References
  • Click on File gt Export
  • In the box next to Save as Type select .rtf
  • Enter a file name for your bibliography
  • Click on Save

Creating a Bibliography (method 2)
  • From within EndNote open a library
  • Go to Tools gt Cite While you Write gt Insert
    Selected Citation(s)
  • Note Use this method if you would like to use
    EndNote to format your bibliography.

Using EndNote with Word
  • When you install EndNote it modifies the Tools
    menu in Microsoft Word to include EndNote tools.
  • These tools allow you to
  • Insert a reference from within a document
  • Format a bibliography

Inserting a Reference While in Word
  • You can insert a reference from within Word by
    clicking on
  • Tools
  • EndNote9
  • Find Citation(s)
  • Enter your search term and click on Search.

  • Changing citation the style

  • Changing default indents
  • Changing spacing between references

Changing Citation the Style
  • Open your bibliography in Word.
  • Go to EndNote
  • Click on Tools gt Cite While You Write
  • Select the Format Bibliography
  • Select the style you prefer from the With output
    style dropdown box

Giving Your Bibliography a Title
  • From within Word select Tools then EndNote9
  • Next select Format Bibliography
  • Click on the Layout tab
  • Enter your title
  • Note You can change font and font size by
    clicking on Text Format.

Changing Default Indents
  • From within Word select Tools then EndNote9
  • Next select Format Bibliography
  • Click on the Layout tab
  • If you would like left your bibliography to be
    aligned change the hanging indent to zero

Changing Spacing Between References
  • From within Word select
  • Tools gt EndNote9
  • Next select Format Bibliography
  • Click on the Layout tab
  • Make changes

Submitting Your Doc for Publication
  • Before you submit your document for publication
    you may want to remove the field codes in your
    paper and bibliography. The fields may create a
    problem for the publisher.
  • To remove field codes
  • Open your Word document
  • Click on the Tools gt Remove Fields Icon
  • You will see a message informing you that a new
    document will be created without codes
  • Save the new document with another name

Using Manuscript Templates
  • EndNote includes various templates that set up
    the proper margins, fonts, spacing, etc. To use
    a template
  • From within EndNote click on Tools and then
    Manuscript Templates
  • Select a the template for your citations style.
    This will open a wizard
  • You will be prompted to enable macros
  • Enable macros and complete the wizard
