Safety Breakout Agenda
  • Objectives of Session 1
  • Review of Safety Trends and Issues
  • Discussion
  • Objectives of Session 2
  • Discussion

3
Breakout Session 1 Objectives
  • Define the problem
  • What are the key roadside issues related to
    commercial vehicle safety/security/mobility?
  • What aspects of these problems may be addressed
    through technology solutions?
  • Identify potential technology solutions
  • Existing technologies
  • Emerging technologies
  • Future technologies
  • Identify potential measures of effectiveness
  • How do we know when we have achieved success?

4
Large Truck Fatal Crash Statistics
5
Large Truck Injury Crash Statistics
6
Large Truck Property Damage Only (PDO) Crash
Statistics
7
Large Truck Crash Causation Study Findings
  • 36 of the crashes studied involved a truck and a
    passenger vehicle
  • When the critical reason was assigned to a large
truck, it was assigned to the driver in 87 of
the cases. Reasons were coded as
  • Decision (e.g., driving too fast for conditions)
  • Recognition (e.g., driver distracted)
  • Non-performance (e.g., driver fell asleep)
  • Performance (e.g., driver froze)
  • 10 percent of the critical reasons involved a
problem with the truck (e.g., braking capacity,
tire or wheel failure, cargo shift)

The Problem
8
Large Truck Crash Causation Study Findings
  • Most common associated factors recorded were
    driver factors
  • Legal drug use
  • Traveling too fast for conditions
  • Unfamiliarity with the roadway
  • Inadequate surveillance
  • Fatigue
  • Feeling under pressure from motor carriers
  • The most common vehicle-associated factor was
    brake problems
  • Traffic flow interruption and requirements that
the driver stop before the crash were prevalent
    roadway factors

The Problem
9
Breakout Session 1 Questions
  • Why do crash and fatality rates remain high?
  • What are the key factors causing crashes?
  • How can we use technology to reduce crash and
    fatality rates
  • Driver assistance technologies
  • Vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-roadside
    communications
  • Roadside enforcement
  • Compliance verification
  • Others?

10
Breakout 2 Objectives
  • Identify key implementation issues to evaluate
and deploy potential smart roadside solutions
  • Statutory or regulatory changes
  • New or enhanced federal or state programs
  • New research and technology activities
  • Targeted funding
  • Data management
  • Interoperability
  • Others

11
Breakout 2 Objectives
  • Discuss ultimate products of smart roadside
    initiative
  • Guiding Principles
  • Roadmap
  • Business Case
  • Identify key stakeholders who needs to be at
    the table?
  • Government
  • Industry
  • Technology
  • Academia
  • Finance
