Facts on Egyptians

• They had a better knowledge of the body compared
  to pre historic.
• they had better tools because they had more money
• They traded at the Nile
• They invented papyrus (paper)
• They used mummification.
• They were around in 3000bc

Some medical problems in Egypt

• Child birth women died during labour
• Starvation people died from lack of food
• Broken bones
• Undigested food-they believed that food clogged
  up intestines
• Eye problems-they didnt know enough about eyes
  to treat them.
• War wounds bleeding to death

What did they think caused illness?

• The theory of the channels- the next slide has
  information about this.
• Gods- they believed the gods made them ill
  because if they did something bad it was like
  they were being punished.
• Evil spirits-this was the same as the gods if
  they did something wrong evil spirits would come
  and punish them.

The theory of the channels

• The Nile was a great influence on Egyptian
  medicine. Water was taken from its channels to
  irrigate crops. This lead them to believe that
  the body was made up of channels, when the
  channels were blocked up from undigested food
  they became ill, they didnt know how to unblock
  them.I think it wasnt a very good idea but it
  got hem away from believing it was the gods who
  made them ill.

What did they use to prevent and treat illness?

• Amulets-they wore these around there neck like
  jewellery,they believed spirits couldn't get to
  them if they wore these.
• Herbs-these were used and still are today as a
  health remedy
• Splints- these were used when you had a broken
  bone.
• Charms/spells-
• Sacrificing-they would kill things to make
  themselves better.

Who treated the sick in Egypt?

• Physicians-a doctor of medicine trained at
  university.
• Medicine men-they gave you advice when you were
  ill.
• Priests-they were like doctors.
• Surgeons-these were introduced in the Egyptians
  times.
• Gods-they went to the gods if they needed help
  because they felt ill

Life expectancy

• The life expectancy in Egypt was about mid
  40s.the rich people lived longer as they could
  afford to have a doctor, the poor people like
  slaves died early of malnutrition.this is when
  you dont get enough of all the right foods to
  provide you with a healthy diet.
