1Sadie
Sadie is a key stage 4 student taking a Higher
Diploma in hair and beauty studies. She sees
hair and beauty as very much part of the fashion
industry. Her ambition is to work on
hairdressing shows and fashion shoots. She likes
the way this Diploma allows her to learn
something about photography, which she thinks
will help her in her career, while concentrating
mainly on hair and beauty.

Project
Sadie was able to spend three weeks working in a
photography studio which specialises in
make-overs for the general public. She assisted
the makeup artist and hair stylist who give each
client a new image for their photography session.
She learnt a great deal about how styles of
makeup and hair could change the persons
appearance and how a natural look in makeup
requires as much time and skill as a very
glamorous look.

An aspect of the Diploma which Sadie found
particularly interesting was the history of
hairstyles and makeup, something which she had
previously never thought about. So, for her
project she decided to research the historical
development of styles as depicted in fashion
photography. She put together a wide selection of
images from different sources including museums,
websites, reference books and magazine and
analysed how styles repeated themselves in
various ways over time. She presented her
findings in the form of a computer slide show
with an audio commentary which described and
explained the changes shown in the photographs.
Progression route Sadie greatly enjoyed her
Higher Diploma and had no hesitation in deciding
to continue on to an Advanced Diploma in Hair and
beauty studies.
