NATIONAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE
- IHY Nigeria is a platform for the Earth
Scientists seeking participation in the global
IHY event.
- The goal of IHY Nigeria is to mobilize and
coordinate physical participation of Nigerians
scientists in the global IHY cooperation.
- We seek to promote a strong and effective
cooperation of the Nigerian scientists so as to
provide a strong coalition and ensure full
participation in IHY.
- Nigerian involvement in IGY (1957) was in
conjunction with the UK as the colonial ruler of
the nation.
- Ionospheric measurements including geomagnetic
observations were pioneered in the country during
IGY
- Ionospheric Physics was developed at University
of Ibadan at the period.
- Meteorological measurements were taken in Nigeria
during the IGY.

SIGNIFICANCE OF NIGERIAN PARTICIPATION
- Nigeria is located in the equatorial region,
which is a complex region of interest in
tropospheric and ionospheric studies due to the
presence of equatorial electrojet. - The number of experts in atmospheric and space
studies has grown tremendously.
- Today heliophysical-based sciences are being
studied at all the universities and some
specialized research agencies and institutes in
Nigeria. - More than 60 Universities with biases in several
aspects of heliophysical based sciences.
- More than 20 specialized agencies and research
Institutes with interest in heliophysical based
sciences.
- Population of Nigeria is 140.3 Million
one-quarter of Africans 600 million population.
- Nigeria has the greatest population of experts in
fields relevant to IHY compare with any other
country in Africa.
- Nigerian atmospheric and space scientists have
made significant contribution to the knowledge of
Solar Terrestrial Physics at international level.
