About Martin
  • Michael Luther King Jr. was born to Alberta, and
Pastor Martin Luther King sr. January 15, 1929 in
the city of Atlanta, Georgia. Michael was re
named Martin at the age of 6. He was the the
    youngest of 3 siblings.
  • As an adult, he married and had 4 children, two
    sons and 2 daughters.

His Education
  • Martin Luther King Jr. was a bright young man, he
graduated from high school at the age of 15. Then
in 1948 he received his B. A. degree from
    Morehouse College, a distinguished Negro
institution of Atlanta. In 1951, after three
years of theological study at Crozer Theological
Seminary in Pennsylvania, he was awarded the B.D.

Police brutality
  • Now known as a national hero and a civil-rights
figure of growing importance, in 1957, Dr. King
gathered black leaders and began developing an
organization now known as the Southern Christian
Leadership Conference (SCLC). King was elected
its president, and soon began helping other
    communities organize their own discrimination
    protests.
  • During a 1963 nonviolent mass protest for fair
hiring practices and the desegregation of
    department-store facilities in Birmingham extreme
police brutality was used against the marchers.
This display had an enormous impact. King was
arrested, but his voice was not silenced.

5
Making a difference
  • Later that year King was a principal speaker
at the historic March on Washington, where he
spoke one of the most passionate speeches of his
career. Time magazine voted him as its Person of
the Year for 1963. A few months later he traveled
to Norway to receive the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize.
When he returned he went right to work. In Selma,
Ala., he led a voter-registration campaign that
ended in the Selma-to-Montgomery Freedom March.
King next brought his crusade to Chicago, where
he created programs to rebuild the slums and
    provide housing.

March For Freedom
  • When James H. Meredith was shot and wounded near
Memphis, Tennessee, while marching for voting
rights. King and other civil rights leaders took
Meredith's place and led the marchers from
Memphis to Jackson, Mississippi. The march ended
with 15,000 people rallying in front of the
    capitol at Jackson.
  • Then on August 5, Dr.King led a march through
Chicago's southwest side to demonstrate the need
for equal access to good housing for African
Americans. White onlookers threw stones at Dr.
King and the marchers, but finally, on December
20, Dr. King announced that the Federal Housing
Administration was funding a program to restore
    housing in Chicago's slums.

I Have A Dream..
  • Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. made many important
speeches and documents in his lifetime including
I See The Promised Land, Letter from a
Birmingham Jail, and Ive Been To The Mountain
Top. But one that stands out and above all,
    was his famous
  • I Have A Dream speech. When he gave this
speech August 28, 1963 at the Lincoln Memorial,
people nationwide heard his words and were
affected. The powerful speech embraced the ears
that received it, and opened the eyes of many
it was a huge stepping stone for his fight for
    civil rights.

8
His Final Speech
  • I just want to do God's will. And He's
allowed me to go to the mountain. And I've looked
over, and I've seen the Promised Land! I may not
get there with you, but I want you to know
tonight that we as a people will get to the
    Promised Land.
  • These were the words Dr. King spoke on April
    3,1968. The very next day,
  • Dr.Martin Luther King Jr. was shot to death on
    the balcony of his motel.
  • His murder set off riots across the United
States. Dozens of people were killed. President
Johnson declared a national day of mourning on
April 9the day Martin Luther King, Jr., was
    buried.
  • Now, 36 years later in his death his dream lives
on. Racial boundaries have been torn down, and
discrimination destroyed. Martin Luther King Jr.
lived his entire life chasing a dream, trying to
bring it to reality. And he had a dream, and
though his life was brought to an end early, he
has been to the mountain top, looked over, and
now hes in the promised land. Watching his dream
    come true.
