Title: Pursuing Godly Relationships
1Pursuing Godly Relationships
2We have many different relationships
- Family
- Peers
- opposite sex
- co-workers
- Christians
- Non-Christians
- Those different from us
- Those in authority teacher, boss, pastor,
mentor, etc.
3For what purpose?
- Blessed are those who love you, O God, and love
their friends in you and their enemies for your
sake. They alone will never lose those who are
dear to them for they love them in one who is
never lost, in God, our God (St. Augustine). - Relationships that are not supernatural, are
superficial.
4Family relationships / Parents
- Exodus 2012 / Deut 516
- Command to honor thy father and mother is
non-conditional - Deuteronomy 49 / 64-9 / 1118-20
- Parents have a Biblical mandate to pass down the
faith to the next generation - Hebrew 127-13 / Proverbs 311-12 / Proverbs
2915 - We discipline those we love
- Proverbs 226
- Parenting guidebook is the Bible
- Proverbs 3011 / 101 / 1520
- Children are as responsible to redeem family
relationships as parents - John 913-23
- Parents are not perfect
- Luke 1511-32
- A fathers love is supposed to be unconditional
- Ephesians 61-4 / Colossians 320
- Be obedient, parents are a watchtower for us
- 1 Timothy 54 8
- Gods desire is that families take care of each
other
5Everclear Father of MinePs. 68 5-6
- Father of MineTell me where have you beenYou
know I just closed my eyesMy whole world
disappearedFather of mineTake me back to the
dayWhen I was still your golden boyBack before
you went away - I remember the blue skiesWalking the blockI
loved it when you held me highI loved to hear
you talkYou would take me to the movieYou would
tke me to the beachYou would take me to a place
insideThat is so hard to reach - Father of mineTell me where did you goYou had
the world inside your handBut you did not seem
to knowFather of mineTell me what do you
seeWhen you look back at your wasted lifeAnd
you don't see me - I was ten years oldDoing all that I couldIt
wasn't easy for meSometimes you would send me a
birthday card(And forget to sign it)With a five
dollar billI never understood you thenAnd I
guess I never will
- Daddy gave me a nameMy dad he gave me a
nameThen he walked awayDaddy gave me a
nameThen he walked awayMy dad gave me a name - Father of mineTell me where have you beenI just
closed my eyesAnd the world disappearedFather
of mineTell me how do you sleepWith the
children you abandonedAnd the wife I saw you
beat - I will never be safeI will never be saneI will
always be weird insideI will always be lameNow
I'm a grown manWith a child of my ownAnd I
swear I'm not going to let her knowAll the pain
I have known
6George Straight Love without End, Amen
- I got sent home from school one day with a shiner
on my eye. - Fightin' was against the rules and it didn't
matter why. - When dad got home I told that story just like I'd
rehearsed. - And then stood there on those tremblin' knees and
waited for the worst. -
- When I became a father in the spring of '81
- There was no doubt that stubborn boy was just
like my father's son. - And when I thought my patience had been tested to
the end, - I took my daddy's secret and I passed it on to
him. -
- Last night I dreamed I died and stood outside
those pearly gates. - When suddenly I realized there must be some
mistake. - If they know half the things I've done, they'll
never let me in. - And then somewhere from the other side I heard
these words again.
Chorus And he said, "Let me tell you a secret
about a father's love, A secret that my daddy
said was just between us." He said, "Daddies
don't just love their children every now and
then. It's a love without end, amen, it's a love
without end, amen."
