4RM-CESU Mission
The mission of the Rocky Mountains Cooperative
Ecosystem Studies Unit is to improve and
disseminate the knowledge base for managing
natural and cultural resources in the rapidly
changing social, cultural, and environmental
landscape of the Rocky Mountain Region, and to
extend its expertise to national issues where
appropriate.

- Understanding ecosystems social change.
- Improving university agency interaction and
collaboration. - Enhancing dialogue between and among scientist,
scholars, resource managers. - Understanding, addressing, and educating about
the national importance of the legacy of the wild
Rockies and wilderness. - Assisting with the training of effective land
managers.

- Mechanism to move federal dollars to
universities - Competition has taken place therefore paperwork
simple and fast - Negotiated indirect rate 17.5
- Cooperative Agreement- involvement of all
parties

- Agency has need that is filled by university
expert - University researcher has an ideafinds agency
partner - RM-CESU Executive Committee initiates a project
and works on it together

10In six years of operation, the RM-CESU has
facilitated many research projects, regional
workshops, and agreements for technical
assistance. A few examples include
- Workshop on wilderness stewardship
- Environmental Histories
- Development of climate monitoring protocols
- Internships and graduate research w/ federal
land agencies - Development of exotic species curriculum
- Survey of culturally scarred trees
