1
Fractions
Brittany Haigh Class of 2007
3-23-07
2
Reducing Fractions
  • Reduce the numerator (top number) and the
denominator (bottom number) by the same number
  • Ex. 4 /2 2
  • 6 /2 3

3
Mixed Numbers changed to Improper Fractions
  • A mixed number is a whole number with a fraction.
    Ex. 1 ¾
  • An improper fraction is a fraction that is more
    than one. Ex. 7/4
  • To change a mixed number to an improper fraction,
you multiply the whole number by the denominator
    (bottom number of fraction). Ex. 1 ¾ 1 4 4
  • Then add that number to the numerator (top number
    of fraction). Ex. 1 ¾ 4 3 7
  • Then put that number over the original
    denominator. Ex. 1 ¾ 7/4

4
Adding Fractions
  • To add fractions with the same denominator, just
add the numerators together. (Dont forget to
    reduce.)
  • Ex. 1 3 4 reduce it /4 1
  • 8 8 8 /4 2
  • To add fractions with different denominators,
change the denominators to the same number. Then
add the numerators together. Then reduce.
  • Ex. 2 3 ? 2 7 14
    3 5 15
  • 5 7 5 7 35
    7 5 35
  • 14 15 29
  • 35 35 35

5
Subtracting Fractions
  • To subtract fractions with the same denominator,
just subtract the numerators. (Dont forget to
    reduce.)
  • Ex. 6 3 3
  • 8 8 8
  • To subtract fractions with different
denominators, change the fractions so they have
the same denominator. Then subtract the
    fractions.
  • Ex. 5 - 2 ? 5 4 20 2 7
    14
  • 7 4 7 4 28
    4 7 28
  • 20 14 6 reduce /2 3
  • 28 28 28 /2
    14

6
Multiplying Fractions
  • To multiply fractions, multiply straight across.
    Then reduce.
  • Ex. 1 7 ? 1 7 7
  • 4 8 4 8 32

7
Dividing Fractions
  • To divide fractions, flip the bottom fraction and
    multiply them. Then Reduce.
  • Ex. 3 3 4 12
    3
  • _4 _ 4 1 4
  • 1
  • 4
