WHAT IS GRAMMAR ?
  • A) The study of how words and their component
    parts combine to form sentences.
  • B) The study of structural relationships in
    language or in a language, sometimes including
    pronunciation, meaning, and linguistic history.

What makes grammar so important?
  • Grammar gives you the ability to communicate
    clearly with all different types of people.
  • Grammar reveals how language works.

Do We Ever Find Grammatical Mistakes?
  • YES!!
  • Sometimes there are grammatical mistakes in
    magazine and newspaper articles.
  • These errors can cause the entire article to be
    unclear as well as tell us something about how
    well the writer or editor proofreads their work.

Example of a Grammatical Error in the Newspaper
  • And the father was Chuck Berry. is not a
    complete sentence.
  • This grammatical error is known as a sentence
    fragment.
  • Definition of a Sentence Fragment A phrase or
    clause that is punctuated and capitalized as a
    sentence but does not constitute a complete
    grammatical sentence.

Example of Incorrect Listing in a Newspaper
  • The first sentence of the second paragraph leaves
    out the word and while listing off clothing.
  • The part of the sentence should correctly read
    sweatshirt, shorts and sandals.

Example of a Missing Letter in a Newspaper
  • In this example of poor grammar, we can see that
    the letter s has been left off of the word
    include.
  • Because of this error the subject does not agree
    with the verb.

Example of Editorial Errors in a Newspaper
  • An editorial comment was left in the actual
    printed version of this article. It has to do
    with checking the spelling of a name.
  • This portion of the sentence has the wrong
    placement of the words. The phrase should read,
    he built a small house. This grammatical error
    is due to typos as well as poor proofreading.
